Booty worthy of pirates is displayed in this fishbowl-size window display: a con-
stellation of diamonds in star settings on a ring, a tiny enamelled green snake
sinking its fangs into a pearl, and diamond drop earrings that end in enamelled
gold skulls. Though they look like heirlooms, these small wonders were worked on
the premises by master jeweller Sigfrido. (

Prison orange is out and plum silk is in at this nonprofit boutique, where fashions
are designed and sewn by inmates in a retraining program at the women's prison
on Giudecca. La Fenice divas have worn Banco Lotto ensembles, and you can steal
the spotlight with smartly tailored jackets (€80 to €140) and opulent handbags
made from velvet donated by Fortuny and Bevilacqua. (

Woven, sculpted and crested like lagoon birds, Zanella's shoes practically demand
that red carpets unfurl before you. The Venetian designer custom-makes shoes, so
the answer is always: yes, you can get those peep-toe numbers in yellow and grey,
