In-Depth Information
Acqua alta (high water) isn't an emergency - it's a tide reaching 110cm above normal
levels and normally happens four to six times a year, between November and April.
Acqua alta may cause flooding in low-lying areas, but waters usually recede within
five hours.
To see if acqua alta is likely, check Venice's Centro Maree 48-hour tidal forecast at
www.comune.venezia.it . Alarms sound when acqua alta is expected to reach the city
within two to four hours:
One even tone (up to 110cm above normal): Barely warrants pauses in happy-hour
conversation.
Two rising tones (110 to 120cm): You might need stivali di gomma (rubber boots).
Three rising tones (around 130cm): Check Centro Maree online to see where pas-
sarelle (gangplank walkways) are in use.
Four rising tones (140cm and up): Businesses may close early.
