In-Depth Information
Paper Jewels at Cárte
Lagoon ripples swirl across marbled-paper statement necklaces and hypnotic
handbags, thanks to the steady hands and restless imagination of carta mar-
morizzata (marbled- paper) maestra Rosanna Corrò at Cárte ( 320 024 87 76;
www.cartevenezia.it ; Calle dei Cristi 1731, San Polo; 11am-5pm Mon-Sat, to 3pm Nov-Mar;
Rialto-Mercato) . After years restoring ancient Venetian books, Corrò began creat-
ing her original, bookish beauties: aquatic cocktail rings, op-art brooches and
zig-zagged jewellery boxes. Wall panels, wedding albums and even chairs can
be custom ordered.
Fierce Clutches at Il Gufo Artigiano
Hot copper and extremely careful handling are the secrets to the embossed
leather designs gracing totes, clutches and wallets in this artisan's atelier (
041 523 40 30; Ruga degli Speziali 299, San Polo; 10am-3.30pm Mon-Sat; Rialto-Mer-
cato) . Ancient ironwork patterns in Venetian windows inspire the swirling
designs on saffron albums and green journals, while the winged lion of St
Mark roars with high-fashion fierceness on scarlet handbags and tawny
satchels.
Furlane Shoes at Pied à Terre
Rialto courtesans and their 30cm-high heels are long gone, but Venetian slip-
pers stay stylish. Colourful furlane (slippers) are handcrafted at Pied à
Terre ( 041 528 55 13; www.piedaterre-venice.com ; Sotoportego degli Oresi 60, San Polo;
10am-1pm & 3-7pm Tue-Sat, 3-7pm Mon; Rialto) with recycled bicycle-tyre treads,
ideal for finding your footing on a gondola. Choose from velvet, brocade or
raw silk in vibrant shades of lemon and ruby, with optional piping. Don't see
your size? Shoes can be custom-made and shipped.
