Top Sights
I Frari
Like moths to an eternal flame, visitors are inexor-
ably drawn to the front of this dim, cavernous 14th-
century cathedral by a tiny, luminous Titian al-
tarpiece. Also known as Basilica di Santa Maria Glori-
osa dei Frari, this church is a towering achievement,
with intricate marquetry choir stalls, a rare Bellini
and a creepy Longhena funeral monument. Italian
Gothic I Frari omits flying buttresses, pinnacles and
gargoyles in favour of small, striking details: con-
trasting red-and-white mouldings, high oculi
(porthole windows) and delicate scalloping under the
roofline.
