Scuola Grande di San Rocco
You'll swear the paint is still fresh on the 50 action-
packed, strikingly modern Tintorettos completed
between 1575 and 1587 for the Scuola Grande di San
Rocco, dedicated to the patron saint of the plague-
stricken. While the 1575-77 plague claimed one-third
of Venice's residents, Tintoretto painted nail-biting
scenes of looming despair and last-minute redemp-
tion, illuminating a survivor's struggle with breath-
taking urgency.
