In-Depth Information
A decade later came an even more dramatic find at
Vergina
-
ancient Aegae
- in
northern Greece, the early capital of the Macedonian kingdom, which later became its
necropolis. Here,
Manolis Andronikos
found a series of royal tombs dating from the
fourth century BC, containing an astonishing hoard of exquisite gold treasures.
Andronikos showed this to have been the
tomb of Philip II
of Macedon, father of
Alexander the Great.
At the beginning of this century archeologists are still at work in the field, although
the emphasis today is as concerned with
conservation
. All too often newly discovered
sites have been inadequately fenced of or protected, and a combination of the
elements, greedy developers and malicious trespassers - sometimes all three - has
caused much damage and deterioration. On a happier note, many of the finds
unearthed during the
Athens metro
expansion were saved and have been tastefully
incorporated into displays at the respective stations, such as Panepistímio, Sýndagma
and Akrópoli.
