In-Depth Information
Peloponnese. It is headed by the package resort of Argási but its treasures really lie in
the succession of sandy beaches, mostly on the eastern side, which culminate in the
stunning strand of Yé r a k a s .
Argási
Barely 4km south of Zákynthos Town, ARGÁSI is the busiest resort on this coast,
sprawling for over a kilometre behind a beach that is scarcely a few feet wide in parts.
Although the rest of the peninsula is far more appealing, it does offer a wide choice of
facilities, including a popular concentration of clubs, and is a closer base for exploring
the rest of the island.
The east coast
The first two coves south of Argási are Kamínia and the more scenic Pórto Zóro . he
main road dips and dives along the east coast of the peninsula, with short access roads
descending to these and other longer beaches further south, such as Iónio and Banana .
Above these contiguous strands, the only real facilities away from the coast are to be
found at the rather formless village of Áno Vassilkós .
he coast ends up at ÁYIOS NIKÓLAOS , which has a good beach and lures day-trippers
from Argási, Kalamáki and Laganás with a free bus service in season. It's a fast-
emerging hamlet with a fair range of amenities.

The west coast
At the very southwestern tip of the peninsula, Yé r a k a s is the star attraction: a sublime
crescent of golden sand. It's also a key loggerhead turtle breeding ground, and is
therefore off-limits between dusk and dawn, as well as being subject to strict rules on
the number and placement of umbrellas. The excellent open-air Turtle Information
Centre ( W earthseasky.org) provides interesting background on these and other sea
creatures, some of which are on display in its recently acquired aquarium.
Further north along the rugged west coast of the peninsula, accessed by the only
(partly unpaved) road which crosses it, is Dháfni , home to a couple of tavernas.
