the inner bay, known as Dhrápano owing to its sickle shape, was initially constructed
by the British in 1813 and is now closed to traffic. The town was totally rebuilt after
the 1953 earthquake, but has an enjoyable atmosphere that remains defiantly Greek,
especially during the evening vólta around Platía Valianou (formerly Platía Metaxá)
- the nerve centre of town - and along the pedestrianized Lithóstroto , the main
shopping street which runs parallel to the seafront.

Museum , behind the Municipal
Theatre, has a rich collection of local
religious and cultural artefacts,
including photographs taken before
and after the earthquake. At the time
of writing it was closed due to staffing
difficulties.

building. It contains elegant furniture
and a collection of lithographs and

The refurbished Archeological Museum
has a sizeable collection of pottery,
jewellery, funerary relics and statuary
from prehistoric, through Mycenaean
to late Classical times. It is well laid out
and labelled, rivalling Corfu Town's (see
p.711) as the best such museum in the
Ionians.

Around 2km south of the town centre,
the pleasantly relaxing Botanical
Gardens have been transformed under
the stewardship of the Focas-
Cosmetatos Foundation into a diverse
collection of the island's flora, arranged
in a natural fashion with a stream
running through the middle.
