ACCOMMODATION, EATING, DRINKING AND NIGHTLIFE
As there are only three hotels and most accommodation on Paxí is booked by foreign tour companies, rooms and villas are
best arranged in advance through one of the island's travel agencies: Gaïos Travel ( T 26620 32033, W gaiostravel.co.uk)
and Bouas Tours ( T 26620 32401, W bouastours.gr), both on the capital's seafront; or Routsis ( T 26620 31807, W routsis-

in Lákka, for northern Paxí.
GÁÏOS
Dodos T 26620 32265. Set in a garden inland from the
Anemoyiannis statue towards the southern end of the
seafront, this old favourite has a full range of mezédhes and
main courses, mostly under €10. May to early Oct daily
noon-midnight.
Ì Genesis T 26620 32495. Convivial, brightly
decorated taverna-cum-café, by far the best of the seafront
establishments, right opposite the Anemoyiannis statue,
serving great wine and home-cooked dishes such as
several types of stifádho , including octopus. May-Oct
daily 10am-1am.
Ì Paxos Beach Hotel T 26620 32211,
W paxosbeachhotel.gr. Attractive en-suite bungalows
with balconies on a hillside above a pebbly beach 2km
south of town; amenities include a saltwater pool, yoga
sessions, tennis court and mini-g olf. Free shuttle bus.

Paxos Club T 26620 32450, W paxosclub.gr. Nearly
2km inland from Gáïos, this luxury resort set in lavish
gardens offers large, well-furnished rooms and suites with
kitchens, as well as a classy resta urant, pool and bar.

PhoenixDisco T 26620 32210. On a hill overlooking the
bay, with a large outdoor dancefloor and the usual mix of
foreign and Greek disco hits, this is the island's premier
nightclub. June-Sept daily10pm-late.
LÁKKA AND AROUND
Ì Alexandros Platía Edward Kennedy T 26620
30045. Very friendly taverna tucked in the southwest
corner of the village, great for fresh fish, gourounópoulo
(roast suckling pig), creamed mushrooms and pork roll for
€10. May-Oct daily 1pm-1am.

Hidden among olive groves behind Harámi beach, the
least expensive of Paxí's three hotels offers comfortable
roo ms w ith private balconies and kitchenettes. May-

Harbour Lights T 26620 31412. Perennial favourite
bar in the middle of the harbour, most likely to stay open
the longest hours. Good range of drinks and mostly well-
known

La Rosa di Paxos T 26620 31471. Slightly upmarket
seafront restaurant, which does good risottos and ravioli, a
variety of salads and some more standard Greek favourites.

Hellenic favourites on the main square, from fish and
meat grills to some tasty oven-baked veggie options, as
well
as
fine
barrelled
wine.

ANDÍPAXI
Bella Vista Vatoúmi beach T 26620 31766. Perched
on a cliff overlooking the cove, this taverna justifies its
name and also dishes up fresh fish and meat grills, plus a
suitable range of salads and mezédhes. June-Sept
noon-6pm.
Spiros Vríka beach T 26620 31172. The oldest taverna
on the island has great grilled and oven food. They can also
arrange self-catering accommodation up in Vígla, the
island's hilltop settlement, on a weekly basis. Late May to
mid-Sept 11am-7pm.
LONGÓS AND AROUND
O Gios T 26620 31735. A simple and cheap taverna in the
middle of the harbour, where you can get great grills, the
odd oven dish and some basic salads and dips. June-Sept
daily noon-midnight.
Ì Vassilis T 26620 30062. Friendly portside restaurant,
where the bus has to squeeze past the pavement tables.
Terrific fish dishes and tasty starters, outlined on a memorable
newspaper-style menu. May-Oct daily 11am-1am.
Lefkádha
LEFKÁDHA (Lefkás) is an oddity, which is exactly why it is some people's favourite
Ionian island. Connected to the mainland by a long causeway through lagoons and a
30m pontoon swivel bridge, it barely feels like an island, at least on the busier eastern
side. Lefkádha was long an important strategic base and approaching the causeway
you pass a series of fortresses, climaxing in the fourteenth-century castle of Santa
