In-Depth Information
drawback is a lack of decent beaches, though there are plenty of pebble strands all
around. Behind the waterfront is a maze of unnamed alleys; on one such is the little
museum (Mon-Fri 9am-1pm, Sat 10am-1pm, Sun 10.30am-1pm; €2). This traces the
history of the place from Mycenaean times - ancient Elymnia was an important city in
Euboea - to the twentieth century, with some wonderful old photos, and it's a fun visit,
where you're likely to get a personal tour from the curator, who speaks little English.
Immediately west of Límni, the hamlets of Sipiádha and Khrónia are virtually
suburbs, each with good pebbly beaches and a choice of accommodation. ROVIÉS , 7km
from Límni, is a bigger place, famous for its olives and with a picturesque, ruined
medieval tower at its heart.

Ayíou Nikoláou Galatáki
Daily: winter 9am-noon & 2-5pm; summer 9am-noon & 5-8pm; knock and wait for entry • Free • Strict clothing rules apply
Around 7km southeast of Límni, the beautiful monastery of Ayíou Nikoláou Galatáki
perches on the wooded slopes of Mount Kandíli, overlooking the Evvian Gulf. Though
much rebuilt since its original Byzantine foundation atop a temple of Poseidon, the
convent retains a thirteenth-century anti-pirate tower and a crypt. One of the six nuns
will show you frescoes dating from a sixteenth-century renovation. Especially vivid, on
the right, is the Entry of the Righteous into Paradise : the virtuous ascend a perilous
ladder to be crowned by angels and received by Christ, while the wicked miss the rungs
and fall into the maw of Leviathan.
There are pebble-and-sand beaches scattered along the road to the monastery, and
more that can only be reached on foot immediately below it.
