rocky; highlights are low-key Kárystos and hiking the nearby mountains and gorges.
he centre , with the sprawling island capital at Halkídha, is green, wealthy and busy
with both industry and agriculture, but for visitors mainly a gateway, with the bridges
at Halkídha and onward transport to Skýros from the easterly port of Kými. In the
north , grain fields, olive groves and pine forest are surrounded by the bulk of the
island's resorts, most dominated by Greek holiday homes.
ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE ÉVVIA
By ferry Ferries make the short crossing from the
mainland to Évvia at various points all the way up the
coast: from Ráfina to Marmári, Ayía Marína to Néa
Stýra, Skála Oropoú to Erétria, Arkítsa to Loutrá
Edhipsoú and Glýfa to Ayiókambos. Which you choose
depends on where you are heading on Évvia; most
run very frequently - details are given under the
individual ports.
By car Two bridges link Évvia to the mainland, the old
drawbridge right in the heart of Halkídha and a
suspension bridge on the outskirts. If you are driving
you can use these or any of the ferries (more expensive,
but the mainland motorway is far faster than roads on
the island if you're heading to the north or south).
By bus KTEL buses run direct from Athens' Liossion bus
station to many destinations on Évvia including
Halkídha, Kárystos, Kými, Límni and Loutrá Edhipsoú.
There are also buses from Athens to all of the mainland
ports above.
By train Frequent trains connect Athens with
Halkídha.

GETTING AROUND
By bus Most places in Évvia can be reached by bus, but
services tend to run just a couple of times a day, so if you
hope to explore you'll really need a car. All the major
rental companies have offices in Halkídha, and there are
local operations in the resorts.

Halkídha
Évvia's capital, HALKÍDHA (ancient
Chalkis), has a population of around
100,000, making it one of the ten
biggest cities in Greece. So it's not
entirely surprising if it often has an
urban feel, rather than an island one.
Nonetheless the centre is compact and
easy to explore, and the busy
waterfront thoroughly attractive.
Right at the centre, beneath the
drawbridge across the narrow Évripos
channel to the mainland, the
gulf-water swirls by like a river; every
few hours the current reverses.
