WALKING ON SKÓPELOS
Away from the main roads there's plenty of walking on Skópelos. Long-time resident Heather
Parsons battles to maintain paths and leads spring/autumn walks along what remains ( T 694
52 49 328, W skopelos-walks.com), as well as publishing a hiking guide, Skopelos Trails . Among
the better walks are those east of Skópelos Town, where three historic monasteries ,
Metamórfosis, Evangelistrías and Prodhrómou (all open approx 8am-1pm & 5-8pm daily),
stand on the slopes of Mount Paloúki. Near Glóssa there's a beautiful 45-minute trail to the
renovated village of Palió Klíma , via the island's oldest settlement, Athéato (Mahalás), slowly
being restored by outsiders, and the foreigner-owned hamlet of Áyii Anáryiri .

Glóssa and around
Skópelos's second town, GLÓSSA , 26km from Hóra near the northwest tip of the island,
is spectacularly arrayed in stepped, hillside tiers, high above the coast. A traditional,
rural place where many of the vernacular houses have overhanging balconies and lush
gardens, it is explored along narrow, steep, mostly car-free lanes (there's an unsigned car
park behind the church on the main road), with breathtaking views around almost
every corner. Apart from wandering the photogenic alleys and visiting the excellent
tavernas, there's not a great deal to do here, and the only official accommodation in
town is in rented houses (rarely available locally); there is a small Folklore Museum just
above the main square, though (Tues, Wed & Fri-Sun 10am-2.30pm & 5.30-9pm,
Thurs 10am-2.30pm; free).
LOUTRÁKI , some 3km steeply down a serpentine road from Glóssa (or on foot by a
shorter, well-signed kalderími ), is a pretty little place with views of Skiáthos. The port
of the larger town, it has a line of cafés and tavernas around the dock, an archeological
kiosk with information on local sites and island history, lots of yachts at anchor and a
narrow pebble beach.
