he Old Skopelitian Mansion Museum , former home of the island's doctor -
subsequently occupied by his three daughters, all spinsters and all doctors - was left to
the town by the last surviving daughter and is displayed much as it was when they lived
here. It's a comfortable, bourgeois home full of everyday items: furniture, clothing,
books and ephemera.

ACCOMMODATION SKÓPELOS TOWN
There are numerous rooms for rent in the backstreets, as well as entire houses, but in high season everything is very booked
up. In mid-summer a Rooms Association office ( T 24240 24567) opens in the lane leading up to Souvláki Square; a wider
choice, including apartments and hotels across the island, can be arranged through helpful Madro Travel, by the old port
( T 24240 22145, W madrotravel.com). August prices are roughly halved the rest of the year.
Adonis T 24240 22231. Old-fashioned establishment
above a taverna, whose central waterfront position
(above the the ferry quay, reached via Souvláki Square)
means noise can be a problem. A couple of the simple
wooden-f loo red, a/c rooms at the front have huge
terraces. €80
Georgios L T 24240 24625, W www.skopelos-hotels
.gr. The last building at the northern end of the harbour,
above the Blue Sea café, houses this small hotel with basic,
old-fashioned, stone-floored room s with a/c and TV; those
at the front have great views. €80
Kir Sotos T 24240 22549, W skopelos.net/sotos.
Rambling old-house pension , set back from the middle
of the harbour, behind the giant plane trees, whose
wood-floored, a/c, en-suite rooms are justifiably a
favourite budget option, though perhaps due for a
revamp. Go for the quieter rear units, especially no. 4,
with its fire place ; there's a communal kitchen and sunny
courtyards. €45
Mylos T 24240 24034, W skopelosweb.gr/milos.
White-painted studios and apartments behind the kástro
(all the way round the ring road, or a steep climb up from
the harbour) with flagstone floors a nd m ini kitchens. They
enjoy great views towards Alónissos. €45
Skopelos Village T 24240 22517, W skopelosvillage
.gr. Pricey, self-catering complex, 600m east around the
bay, with luxurious studios and suites set among
landscaped grounds with two pools and a restaurant. The
Seabreeze studios are worth the extra for their modern
design and sleek bathrooms, th ough it's only good value if
you get a good off-season deal. €125
Ì Thea Home Ring road T 24240 22859,
W skopelosweb.gr/theahome. Lovely rooms and a family
apartment with sweeping views from the top of the town;
accommodation is cosy but very comfortable, with fridge
and a/c. Bikes are available (free) and there's an excellent
home-made brea kfast (extra); new studios and a pool are
being added. €55
EATING AND DRINKING
The seafront is lined with cafés and tavernas, the best of which are up at the old port end; for something rather more
modest, aptly nick-named Souvláki Square is packed with decent fast-food outfits.
Englezos Harbour T 24240 22230. Greek food with a
slight edge, served with a view towards the old port end of
the harbour. There are plenty of straightforward dishes and
great, spit-roasted lamb, pork and chicken (around €10 a
portion), but also some more inventive recipes such as
aubergine (eggplant) millefeuille, feta with chili and
tomato, or beetroot salad. Daily lunch & dinner.
Gorgones T 24240 24709. Popular ouzerí in town
(beside the well-signed Oionos Blue Bar ), with tables in a
stepped alley, garden courtyard and indoors. The usual
meat and seafood at fair prices (prawn pasta €15,
soutsoukákia €7), though occasionally erratic service. Daily
lunch & dinner .
Klimataria Harbour T 24240 22273. Good standard
taverna, just a couple of doors from Englezos , with plenty of
local customers. Menu includes a good selection of fish by
the kilo and local specialities like pork with plums; best to
stick to the simpler dishes. Daily lunch & dinner.
Perivoli T 24240 23758. A beautiful spot in the garden
courtyard of an old house, up an alley just above Souvláki
Square. The upmarket Greek/Mediterranean menu includes
pasta and risotto as well as inventive Greek dishes like
rolled pork with apple and plum in wine sauce (€11) or
stuffed zucchini (€7.50) - plus a selection of wines by the
glass. Evenings only, from 7.30pm.
Ì Ta Kymata (Angelos) Old port T 24240 22381.
About the oldest taverna on Skópelos, a shrine of quality
mayireftá such as exohikó (a local speciality of lamb and
vegetables in a filo triangle) and mezédhes like fresh beets
with their own greens. Daily lunch & dinner.
