ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE
SKÓPELOS
By ferry Hellenic Seaways ( W hsw.gr) flying dolphins and
ferries run three times daily for most of the year - more in
midsummer - to and from Alónissos (20-35min), and to
Skiáthos (50min-1hr) and either Vólos (2hr 45min-3hr
45min) or Áyios Konstandínos (2hr 15min-4hr); some of
these call at Loutráki, the port for Glóssa (and known as
Glóssa on ferry and hydrofoil schedules), as well as
Skópelos Town. In summer NEL Lines ( W nel.gr) also have a
ferry with daily connection to Alónissos, Skiáthos and Áyios
Konstandínos, and Skyros Shipping ( W sne.gr) go twice a
week to Alónissos and Kými on Évvia (3hr 20min).
Connections to flights in Skiáthos can be very busy: try to
book in advance.
Tickets and agencies There are ticket booths on the dock
in Skópelos Town at busy times; otherwise the Hellenic
Seaways agent ( T 24270 22767) is directly opposite the
harbour gate, and NEL and Skyros Shipping are handled by
Lemonis Travel ( T 24270 22363), by the National Bank, on
the far side of the harbour close to the old port. The harbour
agent in Loutráki is Triandafyllou ( T 24240 33435).

Services Several banks with ATMs are on the quayside in
Skópelos Town; the post office is on Dhoulídhi, just off
Platía Plátanos (“Souvláki Square”), which lies directly up
from the ferry harbour. Cafés all along the front have wi-fi;
Blue Sea, the very last place at the northern (old port) end
of the harbour, is a large internet café.
Useful websites W skopelos.net, W skopelosweb.gr
and W skopelos.com. There's no tourist office on the
island.
Newspapers English-language newspapers are sold at a
shop just off Souvláki Square.
GETTING AROUND
By bus Services run from Skópelos Town, across to the
island's south coast, and then along the south and west
coast past all the major beaches; in summer at least a
dozen buses a day ply to Miliá - just over half of them
continue as far as Glóssa. The bus stop is immediately to the
left as you leave the ferry dock in Hóra.
By car and scooter There are numerous car and scooter
rental outlets near the ferry dock in Hóra, around the corner
of the coast road and the main road heading inland, and
along this inland road; they include Magic ( T 22420
23250,
23033, W skopelosweb.gr/discovery).
By taxi The central taxi stand is to the left as you leave the
ferry dock in Hóra.
By bicycle Skópelos Cycling ( T 22420 22398), based at
Stáfylos beach, rents out mountain bikes.
Boat trips A huge variety of boat trips is on offer around
the harbour, at prices ranging from around €10, for a return
shuttle to Glystéri beach, to €30 for a trip to Alónissos;
island circuits, many of them Mamma Mia! themed, go for
around €20.

Skópelos Town
SKÓPELOS TOWN (Hóra) pours of a hill on the west flank of a wide, oval bay: a cascade
of handsome mansions and slate-domed churches below the ruined Venetian kástro .
Away from the waterside commercial
strip, the hóra is endearingly time-
warped - indeed among the most
unspoilt in the islands - with
wonderfully idiosyncratic shops of a
sort long vanished elsewhere, and
vernacular domestic architecture
unadulterated with tasteless
monstrosities.
