The Boúrtzi
The peninsula that separates the two harbours, the Boúrtzi , makes for an enjoyable
stroll. Surrounded by crumbling defences and a few rusty cannon - there was a castle
in this obvious defensive position from at least the thirteenth century - it is today a
peaceful setting for occasional exhibitions, a café with great views, and an open-air
municipal theatre, with regular summertime music and drama performances.
The rest of the island
Skiáthos's south coast is lined with beach after beach after beach, almost all of them
easily accessible on the bus. If you want to explore the mountainous area north of
town, though, or get to the north-coast beaches, you'll need to have your own transport
or be prepared for some very hot hiking. Be warned that a moped simply won't make it
up some of the exceptionally steep tracks, especially around Kástro. Thanks to the
humid climate and springs fed from the mainland, the interior is exceptionally green,
thick with pine, lentisc, holm oak, heather and arbutus even where (as is all too
common) it has been ravaged by forest fires over the years. There are plenty of villas
and tourist facilities on the coast and chapels and farms in the interior, but only Troúlos
(with another excellent beach) really counts as a village, and even that a tiny one.
Evangelistrías monastery
Monastery Daily 10am-sunset • Free Museum 10am-2pm • €2
From town, you can drive up to eighteenth-century Evangelistrías monastery in ten
minutes, or walk it in just over an hour; the path takes various short-cuts from the road,
mostly well signed, starting out from the ring road close to bus stop 2. A beautiful and
much revered spot and the scene of major pilgrimages at Easter and on August 15, it
was here that the modern Greek flag was first unfurled in 1807. Inside it's alive with the
