In-Depth Information
The bazaar area
Inland, the town skyline is dominated in turn by the Germanic-Gothic belfry spire
of Áyios Athanásios cathedral and the mammary dome of Áyios Therápon , both
expressions of the (post)-Baroque taste of the nineteenth-century Ottoman Greek
bourgeoisie. The interior decor of Áyios Therápon in particular seems more
appropriate to an opera house than a church, with gilt aplenty in the vaulting and
ornate column capitals. They stand more or less at opposite ends of the bazaar ,
whose main street, Ermoú, links the town centre with the little-used north harbour
of Epáno Skála .

The old town
Between the bazaar and Epáno Skála, Ermoú passes various expensive antique shops near
the roofless, derelict Yéni Tzamí at the heart of the old Muslim quarter, just a few steps east
of a superb Turkish hammam , restored to its former glory but - like the mosque - closed
