In-Depth Information
Myrtiés to Armeós
Beach tourism on Kálymnos is most heavily concentrated in the twin resorts of MYRTIÉS
and MASSOÚRI . Occupying neighbouring coves that start 8km northwest of Póthia, they
face across to towering Télendhos islet (see below), and enjoy dramatic sunsets .
They're easy enough to reach on the island's main road, though once it's crossed the
island to Pánormos the road has to climb the Kamári pass before it can zigzag back down
to the sea. A lengthy one-way loop then leads drivers through the two resorts. There's no
significant gap in the commercial strip of restaurants and hotels that runs through them
both, 50m up from the beach, and neither has a historic core or town centre.
The narrow, pebbly beach at Myrtiés has a marina at its southern end and the small
concrete jetty used by the Télendhos ferries in the middle. The beach at Massoúri, ten
minutes' walk north, is broader and sandier; the largest and liveliest on the island, it
has a noisy beach-bar vibe in summer. There's also an all-sand beach at Melitsáhas cove,
500m south of Myrtiés, but its surroundings have become very run-down; don't reckon
on staying there.
Another kilometre north of Massoúri, the coastal village of Armeós is the terminus
for most local buses. In low season especially, it tends to be dominated by European
rock-climbers . Several popular cliffs soar overhead - look for the route-inscribed
columns at their base - and various businesses cater to climbers' needs.

Télendhos
The towering pyramid-shaped islet of TÉLENDHOS , silhouetted at sunset a few hundred
metres west of Myrtiés, was severed from Kálymnos by a cataclysmic earthquake in 554
AD. Car-free, home to a mere handful of year-round inhabitants, and blissfully
tranquil, it's the single most compelling destination for Kálymnos visitors, and the
short row of hotels and restaurants on its east-facing shore makes it a great place to
spend a few nights. Regular little boat-buses shuttle across the narrow straits between
Myrtiés and Télendhos (every 30min 8am-midnight; €2); it's said that somewhere far
below, an ancient town lies submerged.
