water. Besides the excellent local cheese , Astypálea is renowned for its honey , ish
and lobster .
There is no package tourism on Astypálea, and its remoteness discourages casual
trade. During the short, intense midsummer season (mid-July to early Sept), however,
visitors vastly outnumber the 1500 permanent inhabitants. The one real drawback is
that transport connections are so poor.
ARRIVAL AND INFORMATION
ASTYPÁLEA
By air Astypálea's tiny airport, 8km east of Hóra and Péra
Yialós, has infrequent connections to Athens (1 weekly)
and to Léros, Kos and Rhodes, all on the same plane (2-3
weekly). Many hotels will pick up and drop off guests, and
buses and taxis are available (see below).
By ferry Astypálea's main ferry port, at Áyios Andhréas,
7km north of Péra Yialós, is extremely inconvenient. There
are no facilities whatsoever, and almost all boats arrive and
depart in the dead of night. It's connected to Amorgós (2
weekly; 1hr 25min); Dhonoússa (3 weekly; 2hr 20min);
Kálymnos (1 weekly; 2hr 15min; Kastellórizo (1 weekly;
15hr 10min); Kos (1 weekly; 3hr 35min); Náxos (3 weekly;
3hr 45min); Páros (3 weekly; 5hr); Pireás (4 weekly; 9hr
45min-11hr 35min); Rhodes (1 weekly; 9hr 10min); Sými
(1 weekly; 8hr 25min); Tílos (1 weekly; 6hr 35min). In
addition, just one boat, the Nissos Kalymnos, calls in at Péra
Yialós, with connections to Kálymnos only (3 weekly; 2hr
45min).
Travel agencies Ferry tickets can be bought in Péra Yialós
from Astypalea Tours ( T 22430 61571) and Paradise
( T 22430 61224).
Tourist of ce There's an information office in one of the
windmills at the approach to Hóra (June-Sept daily
6-9pm; T 22430 61412, W astypalia.gr).
GETTING AROUND
By bus Ten buses daily connect Péra Yialós with Hóra,
Livádhia and Maltezána, and drop passengers at beaches
along the way. A connecting bus takes passengers from the
airport to Péra Yialós or Maltezána.
By taxi The island's only taxi ( T 22430 61087) can't cope
with passenger numbers in season. Fares are reasonable, at
around €10 from the airport to Péra Yialós.
By car and scooter In Péra Yialós from Lakis and Manolis
( T 22430 61263), Tomaso ( T 22430 61000, W tomaso.gr)
and Vergoulis ( T 22430 61351), or through several island
hotels.
