immaculate units in this bright whitewashed building, on
the west hillside immediately above the jetty, vary in size,
but all have pastel-hued furnishings and kit che nettes, and
several have enormous sea-view balconies. €60

well-appointed apartments, right on the harbour just
above the ferry jetty, and available year-round through
Tilos Travel. Each is designed for three, wit h a galleried
sleeping area, kitchen, and sea-view balcony. €60

.gr. Assorted very spacious one- and two-bedroom
apartments, within a few metres of the water roughly two-
thirds of the way around the bay. All have at least partial
sea views, and are decorated in cool c ontem porary colours.

W elenihoteltilos.gr. The best value on the shoreline,
about halfway around the bay just as the continuous
strip peters out. 36 airy, whitewashed rooms in four
separate blocks; 31 have full-on sea views, five partial,
and there's wheelchair access. Superbly attentive and
sympath etic management. Rates include breakfast and
sunbeds. €60

Friendly hotel-cum-taverna, out on its own at the far east
end of the bay. A dozen or so peaceful, well-cared-for
three-bedded rooms, plus what's effectively its own beach.
It's a ten-minute walk back to the m ain s trip of restaurants,
but the food here is perfectly good. €70
Ilidi Rock T 22410 44293, W tilosholidays.gr. Tílos'
largest and newest hotel, dropping in bright-white tiers to
water's edge at the west end of the bay, five minutes' walk
from the ferry. State-of-the-art studios and apartments
sleeping up to four; one wing has disabled access. Two
little private pocket beaches, plus gym facilities. Open all
year, break fast served summer only. A/c available at extra
cost. €100

landscaped low-rise hotel, 200m inland from the middle of
the beach. The large pool, good breakfasts from the onsite
café, wi-fi signal and pleasant gardens mak e up for
somewhat small, mock-antique furnished rooms. €60

Substantial modern complex of studios, in a quiet hillside
location 400m back from the sea. They're perfectly
presentable, though the furnishings look strai ght from
IKEA and there are two single beds in each room. €55

EATING AND DRINKING
CaféBar Georges T 22460 44257. Traditional old bar on
the main square, where the outdoor tables are filled nightly
with locals watching the world go by. Daily 8am-late.
Iy Omonoia T 22460 44287. Enduringly popular
traditional café, also known as Tou Mihali , stretching under
trees strung with light bulbs beside the square, just up from
the sea. A good venue for a sundowner, breakfast or a drink
while waiting for a ferry; its inexpensive, tasty, generous
mezédhes will stand in for a formal meal. Daily 8am-late.
Mihalis T 22460 44359. Welcoming taverna, set in
attractive gardens a short walk back from the sea, 50m east
of the central square. No-nonsense fish for around €10,
roast goat for a little less, as well as good vegetable platters
and non-CAIR bulk wine. Daily 8am-late.
Ì Oneiro/Dream Very popular “Grill and Fish House”,
open to the sea breezes near the centre of the beachfront
promenade. Excellent grills and spit-roasts, typically
costing €8 for meat and €12 for fish. Be prepared to wait for
your food in high season. Daily lunch & dinner.
Taverna Trata T 22460 44364. Relaxed taverna, 100m
inland from the beach at the first bend in the road, serving
good local food on a nice open-air terrace. Check in the
kitchen to see what's cooking, or sample grilled meat or fish
for around €10. Daily lunch & dinner.
To Armenon T 22460 44134. Professionally run and
salubrious beach-taverna-cum-ouzerí, right by the sea in
the middle of the bay, with large portions of octopus salad
(€8.50), white beans, meaty mains and fish platters
(typically €12.50), plus pasta and pizza, all washed down
by Alfa beer on tap. Daily 10am-late.
To Mikro Kafé Pretty little shoreline cottage, nicely restored
to create a buzzing, music-oriented bar and café that also
offers a reasonable snack menu. The rooftop terrace is a great
spot for late-night stargazing. Daily 5pm-late.
Beaches near Livádhia
It's easy to spend days on end lazing on the beach at Livádhia itself but quieter
alternatives lies within easy walking distance. An obvious trail heads north to the
pebble bay of Lethrá , a walk that takes around an hour one-way. Two-thirds of the way
along, a side-path drops to the tiny red-sand beach of Ammóhosti , which you're
unlikely to have to yourself.
Another hour-long hike, to the secluded south-shore cove of Stavrós , starts between
the Tilos Mare Hotel and the Castellania Apartments ; once up to the saddle with its
