Ta Kioupia
Menekleous 22
T
22410 30192; see map,
p.518.
Friendly, high-quality restaurant, perched towards
the top of the Old Town, slightly south of Sokrátous. Its
contemporary twists on classic Greek cuisine are
consistently delicious - you'll remember the smoked
aubergine with feta, and the blue cheese mousse, for a
long time. It all works out expensive, though, especially as
they make a habit of charging for the various little bonus
extra plates they bring to your table. Expect to pay around
€40 per head.
Daily lunch & dinner, closes 6pm Sun.

Alias “Kiki's” after the jolly proprietress,
this homely, inexpensive local, across from the Franciscan
monastery, is tops for meat grills, sourced from their own
butcher/farm; veal liver costs €6, a mixed grill €8. There's
usually a cooked vegetable dish like okra for the salad-
averse. Most seating is indoors, but there's a little shaded
courtyard at the side.
Daily lunch & dinner.
Ronda

see map, p.516.
Built by the Italians as a waterfront spa
complex, and every bit as round as the name implies, this
large-domed room now houses a very spacious and rather
expensive café. There's nothing remarkable about the food
or drink, but it's a lovely place to sit, with views through its
huge arched windows of the beach to one side and the
harbour to the other.
Daily 9am-1am.

A
friendly old favourite with pleasant patio and indoor

) and the usual starters.

see map, p.516.
This small but enormously popular New-
Town newcomer serves good but expensive traditional
cuisine. Steaks cost €25-30 each, and there's a wine list to
match. If you're happy to spend a lot, you'll have a real
feast; show any reluctance, and the charming service turns
off like a tap.
Daily lunch & dinner.

chunky hummus, and superb roast aubergine with beans
and onions to a local crowd; pleasant winter salon inside.
Daily lunch & dinner.

NIGHTLIFE AND ENTERTAINMENT
In the Old Town, an entire alley (Miltiádhou) of Apelloú is home to a score of loud, annually changing music bars and clubs,
extending towards Plátonos and Platía Dhamayítou, and frequented mostly by Greeks (in winter too). Two a/c cinemas show
first-run action films year-round: the Metropol multiplex, at the corner of Venetokléon and Výronos (
T
22410 28410),
southeast of the Old Town opposite the stadium, and the nearby Pallas multiplex on Dhimokratías (
T
22410 24475).
Bekir Karakuzu
Sokrátous 76, Old Town; see map,
p.518.
The last traditional Turkish
kafenío
in the Old Town
simply oozes atmosphere; its Oriental-fantasy interior is
filled with wooden screens and has an ornate
votsalotó
floor. Yoghurt,
loukoúmi
,
alisfakiá
tea and coffees are on the
expensive side - consider it admission to an informal
museum.
Daily 11am-midnight.
Besara Kafé
Sofokléous 11-13, Old Town; see map,
p.518.
Congenial breakfast-snack café-cum-low-key bar run
by Australian-Texan Besara Harris, with a mixed clientele and
live jazz two nights weekly Oct-May.
Daily 9am until late.
Christos' Garden
Dhilberáki 59, Neohóri; see map,

club, a live music venue, and “Heaven”, the top-floor chill-
out bar.
Daily 9pm until late.
Rogmi tou Kronou
Platía Aríonos 4, Old Town
T
22410
25202; see map, p.518.
Rock-oriented bar and music
venue, taking up two storeys of a fine old house on one of
the Old Town's most attractive squares - outside tables
make this a great spot for a drink. Live music or DJs every
night until late.
Daily noon until late.
Santana Music Bar
Miltiadou 4-8, Old Town
T
695 53
12 251; see map, p.518.
Somewhat garish bar and music
venue, on an alleyway just off Sokrátous - look out for the
creeping flowers - which unlikely as it may seem is the one
Old-Town spot where you may catch live, late-night
rembétika and local music.
Daily 9am until late, closed
Sun-Thurs in winter.
