restored and contains a fine display, covering the local area from Minoan through to
Roman times. In the courtyard garden, a huge fountain and the base of a minaret
survive from the period when the Ottomans converted the church into a mosque;
around them are scattered various other sculptures and architectural remnants.

he nearby Folklore Museum is worth a look as much for its setting, on a fine courtyard
that is also home to Haniá's Roman Catholic church, as for its contents. This small
museum replicates a “traditional” Cretan house, with furnishings, tapestries and
artefacts on display.
The beaches
Haniá's beaches lie to the west of the city and on the Akrotíri peninsula to the
northeast. The clean city beach (Néa Hóra) is no more than a ten-minute walk west,
following the shoreline from the Naval Museum, but for more extensive spaces you're
better of heading further west along the coast to the beaches of Khrissi Akti , Áyios
Apostólis and Kalamáki . hese beaches can get pretty crowded but they may be a
considerable improvement over the beach in Haniá itself. Further afield there are even
finer beaches at Áyía Marína (see p.499) to the west, or Kalathás and Stavrós (p.499)
out on the Akrotíri peninsula, all of which can be reached by KTEL buses from the
main station.
