ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE
RÉTHYMNON
By bus The bus station in Réthymnon is by the sea to the
west of the town centre just of Periferiakós, the road which
skirts the waterfront around the fortress.
Destinations Arkádhi monastery (3 daily; 40min); Ayía
Galíni via Spíli (4 daily 5.30am-2.15pm; 45min-1hr
30min); Haniá (16 daily 7.30-10.30pm; 1hr 30min);
Iráklion (18 daily 6.30am-10.15pm; 1hr 30min); Plakiás (4
daily 6.15am-7.30pm; 50min).

accommodation lists.
Services Galero Internet Café, Rimóndi fountain (daily
9am-midnight). Ellotia Tours, Arkhadíou 155, behind the

reliable source of travel information and tickets.
ACCOMMODATION
There's a great number of places to stay in Réthymnon, and only at the height of the season are you likely to have difficulty
finding somewhere, though you may get weary looking. The greatest concentration of rooms is in the tangled streets west
of the inner harbour, between the Rimóndi fountain and the museums; there are also quite a few places on and around
Arkadhíou and Platía Plastíra.

range hotel is styled with a mix of marble, chrome and
wood, while cream furnishings complement the traditional
wooden furniture in the rooms and suites, which have a/c,

.gr. High-class hotel with a brilliant position just north of
the ferry dock; little chance of getting one of their superior
balcony sea-view rooms without prebooking in high
season, though. Facilities include a swimmi ng p ool, bar

CAMPING
Camping Elizabeth 4km east of town T 28310 28694,
W camping-elizabeth.com. A pleasant, large site on the
beach with all facilities and wi-fi. Special rates for long-
term stays in autumn/winter. To get here take th e bus for
the out-of-town hotels (marked Scaleta/El Greco). €20
EATING AND DRINKING
The most touristy restaurants are arrayed immediately behind the town beach with menu picture boards outside - many
of them overpriced and mediocre - and around the inner harbour there's a cluster of expensive and intimate fish tavernas.
The most inviting and best-value places to eat tend to be scattered in less obvious parts of the old town.
Castelvecchio Himáras 29 T 28310 55163. This long-
established family taverna next to the fortress has a large
pleasant terrace with stylish seating and a great view over
