When it comes to eating, there are plenty of tavernas in the area. With the exception of Palékastro, there are few, if any,
bars in these quiet villages.

the hotel, in the heart of the village, serving Greek and
Cretan dishes. April-Oct daily 10am-late.
Mythos On the main square T 28430 61243. This
popular family-run taverna serves good traditional food,
with meat, fish and plenty of vegetarian options. Friendly
service and economical prices. Daily 10am-late.
Taverna Vaios Angáthia T 28430 61043. Up the hill from
the bridge leading into the village, on the right. Makes a good
lunch stop; their home-cooked food and charcoal-grilled
meats (from €5.50) are served on a large roadside terrace in
this quiet village. May-Oct daily lunch & dinner.
To Botsalo Kouremenos beach. Cretan dishes, fish and
grills served on a large pleasant terrace facing the sea and
shaded by tamarisk trees. May-Oct daily lunch & dinner.
Ì Xiona Taverna Hióna beach T 28430 61228. A great
spot at the northern end of the beach; fresh fish and seafood
(try the kalamari €7) are served on a shady terrace perched on
the rocks above the sea. May-Oct daily lunch & dinner.
KÁTO ZÁKROS
Ì Akrogiali On the beachfront T 28430 26893. With
a large shady terrace by the water's edge, this relaxed
taverna serves good fish, seafood and charcoal-grill meats
(€6). The friendly owner, Nikos, also acts as an agent for
many room options nearby. March-Nov daily 9am-late.
XERÓKAMBOS
Akrogiali On the beachfront, at the south end. This
taverna serves up fresh fish, seafood, salads and Cretan
dishes on a large terrace set back from the beach with good
sea views. April-Oct daily lunch & dinner.
Liviko View Below the apartments of the same name
(see above). The cooking here, with organic ingredients
grown on the family farm, is recommended and there is a
wonderful terrace. Vegetarian dishes from €4. April-Oct
daily lunch & dinner.

Ierápetra and the southeast coast
The main road across the island from Sitía to the south coast runs between the east and
west ranges of the Sitía mountains . One of the first places it hits on the south coast is
the sprawling resort of Makryialós , but from here to the bustling town and resort of
Ierápetra there's little reason to stop; the few beaches are rocky and the coastal plain
submerged under ranks of polythene-covered greenhouses. A more tranquil hideaway
lies just west of Ierápetra, the charming resort of Mýrtos .
