In-Depth Information
at Kateloumátsa , of all shapes and sizes, and forty-five minutes to Monastíri , where
the bus stops - all without facilities, so come prepared.
The monasteries
Monastíri in Anáfi means the monastery of Zoödhóhou Piyís . The bus stops only a few
hundred metres before the building. A ruined temple of Apollo, supposedly built by
the grateful Argonauts, is incorporated into the monastery, while the courtyard, with a
welcome cistern, is the venue for the island's major festivals, celebrated eleven days after
Easter and September 7-8. Go left immediately before the monastery to join the
spectacular onward path to Kalamiótissa , another monastery perched atop the abrupt
limestone pinnacle at the extreme southeast of the island. It takes another hour to
reach, but is eminently worthwhile for the stunning scenery and views over the entire
south coast - there is no accessible water up here, so bring enough with you.
