The east and north
The main road east via the unexciting village of Áno Méra leads to Ayía Ánna , on a
double-headed headland with a shingle beach and taverna, just before the larger, more
attractive Kalafáti , the island's cleanest beach. Liá , roughly 4.6km east by road from
Áno Méra, is smaller than Kalafáti, but as pleasant and with as clear water.
he north coast suffers persistent battering from the meltémi and for the most part is
bare, brown and exposed. The deep inlet of Pánormos Bay is the exception to this, with
the lovely, relatively sheltered beaches of Pánormos and Áyios Sóstis ; although not
served by buses, they are becoming increasingly popular, but still remain among the
least crowded on the island. At the southern, inner end of the bay, Fteliá is a good
windsurfers' beach and legendary burial site of Ajax, one of The Iliad 's mythical heroes.
If you are driving there, stop by at the only - but excellent - vineyard on the island,
Bíoma ( T 22890 71883), for some wine tasting.

Mýkonos. The ancient town lies on the west coast on flat, sometimes marshy ground
that rises in the south to Mount Kýnthos .
