Ándhros
ÁNDHROS , the second largest and northernmost of the Cyclades, is also one of the most
verdant, its fertile, well-watered valleys and hillsides sprouting scores of holiday villas. Still
home to a very hospitable people, an attractive capital, numerous good beaches, plus
some idiosyncratic reminders of the Venetian period - such as the peristereónes (dovecote
towers) and the frákhtes (dry-stone walls) - Ándhros has a special charm. Driving is also a
joy, with precipitous coastal roads offering panoramic views over the Aegean.
The only cloud in your enjoyment of the island may be the current shutdown of all
state museums on Ándhros; check if they have opened before you visit.

island
establishments. Try the reliable and friendly Euro Car
( T 22820 71312, W rentacareuro.com) right in front of the
disembarkation point. As the island is very large and tricky
to explore, and the bus services limited, you are advised to
book your transport before arriving.

Gávrio and around
GÁVRIO is a pleasant enough small town set in an oval bay, but it has more tavernas and
bars than good hotels, which generally tend to be out of town. There is an adjacent
town beach, but there are more attractive alternatives 5km northwest of the port:
beautiful Fellós is very popular with the self-catering holiday community, while
Kourtáli hidden beyond the headland is as popular but with fewer facilities.
Head inland and south from Gávrio, and you reach the best beaches on the island in
a row: Áyios Pétros attracts the young because of the lively beach bar; Khryssí Ammos is
long, sandy and very popular with families; Kyprí is a long stretch of fine sand; and
Áyios Kyprianos , just before you reach the major resort of Batsí , is located in a small
sheltered cove of the same name.
