little rock tunnel leads west to a second beach, which is backed by extraordinarily
coloured cliffs and where steam vents heat the shallow water. Ayía Kyriakí , further to the
west of Paleohóri, is a pebble beach under imposing sulphurous and red oxide cliffs.

Hivadholímni and the west
The westerly road from the Kánava junction leads past the airport entrance to
HIVADHOLÍMNI , the best beach on Mílos bay itself. Behind the beach is a salty lagoon,
where in May and September you can observe migrating birdlife. Just before
Hivadholímni, you can fork south to Provatás , a short beach, closed off by
multicoloured cliffs to the east. It's easy to get to so it hasn't escaped development.
Forking to the east before Provatás, the road leads to the trendy and very popular
beach of Firipláka . Further east, on a dirt road, sandy Tsigrádho is excellent for
swimming and usually uncrowded. Going west from the Kanava junction the surfaced
road ends at Ayía Marína , although a dirt road continues into Hálakas and the small
fishing village of Embourió with a perfectly acceptable beach.
For the most part, the southwestern peninsula of Hálakas centred on the wilderness
of Mount Profítis Ilías (748m) is an uninhabited nature reserve with unsurfaced, dirt
tracks, two of which lead to the fine, unspoilt beaches of Triádhes and Ammoudharáki
Kléftiko in the southwest corner. It is only reachable by boat, but repays the effort to get
there with its stunning rock formations and semi-submerged tunnels.

HIVADHOLÍMNI
Milos Camping T 22870 31410, W miloscamping.gr.

beach; its minibus meets ferries, and in summer there are
frequent buses to and from Adhámas. There is a decent

The north coast
From either Adhámas or the Pláka area, good roads run roughly parallel to the NORTH
COAST which, despite being windswept and sparsely inhabited, is not devoid of
geological interest. Sarakíniko , in particular, is an astonishing sculpted inlet with a
sandy sea bed and gleaming white rocks popular with sunbathing local youth. Nearby
Mýtakas is another good beach, accessible via a 500m dirt road, with dramatic views
west along the rocky coastline.
Eastwards you reach another of Mílos's coastal wonders, Papáfranga , a short ravine
into which the sea flows under a rock arch - the tiny beach at its inland end is
accessed by rock-carved steps. To the right of the Papáfranga car park, the remains
of three superimposed Neolithic settlements crown a small knoll at Phylakope
(Tues-Sun 8.30am-3pm; free). Pollónia , the end of the road 12km northeast of
Adhámas, is a small harbour within a semicircular bay with a long, curved,
tamarisk-lined beach. This is where you take the small ferry to Kímolos (see
opposite) opposite.
INFORMATION
THE NORTH COAST
Activities Pollónia is immensely popular with
windsurfers and divers; the Apollon Dive Centre
( T 22870 41451) offers PADI courses, snorkelling trips
and equipment rental.
