popular routes will be booked up, so it is important to
check availability upon arrival in Greece and book your
outward and inbound pre-flight ferry tickets well ahead
(particularly those returning to Pireás from the most
popular islands). That said, agents may have little
advance information on ferry schedules, and purchasing
a ticket too far in advance can lead to problems with
delayed or cancelled boats. There is usually more space on
ferries sailing between islands than to and from Pireás.
Timetables
The frequency of Pireás, Lávrio and Rafína
sailings given in the chapter is from June to August, and the
timings are for both direct and indirect services. For other
islands the listings are intended to give an idea of services
from late June to early Sept, when most visitors tour the
islands. During other months, expect schedules to be at or
below the minimum level listed, with some ferries
cancelled entirely.
BY FERRY
Most of the Cyclades are served by main-line ferries from
Pireás. Boats for Kéa, and seasonally elsewhere, depart
from Lávrio. There are regular services from Rafína to
Ándhros, Tínos and Mýkonos, with seasonal sailings
elsewhere. All three ports are easily reached by bus from
Athens. Between May and Sept there are also a few weekly
sailings to the most popular islands from Crete and the
eastern Aegean.
