A popular, upmarket escape for Athenians,

had brief fame and a vogue as a
package destination, largely thanks to John Fowles, who lived here in the early 1950s
and used the place, thinly disguised, as the setting for his cult novel
he Magus
. But the
island never developed the mass infrastructure - or the convenient beaches - to match.
Today, the town is much the biggest in the Saronic islands, with apartments and villas
spreading for several kilometres along the northeast coast, while the rest of the island
remains almost entirely uninhabited, with pine forest inland and numerous excellent
small beaches around the coast.

By ferry
At least five daily Hellenic Seaways hydrofoils
and flying cats connect Spétses with Pireás (2hr 20min)
via Ýdhra (45min) and Póros (1hr 25min). Around three a
day call at mainland Ermióni en route, and in the other
direction continue to Pórto Héli. A car ferry and seasonal
passenger boats also run several times daily to Kósta on
the nearby mainland (though you can't bring a car to the
island). All of them dock pretty much in the heart of
town at the cannon-studded main harbour known as the
Dápia.

Many of the harbour cafés have free wi-fi, but
