GETTING AROUND
5
By bus
Buses (€1.50) depart to Kalávria, west to Russian
Bay or east to the monastery, hourly on the hour from the
road across from Platía Iroön (less frequent out of season).
By taxi
The taxi rank is close to Platía Iroön; a taxi to the
beaches is less than €5.
By car or bike
Travel agents in town can rent you a car, or
a quad-bike or scooter, though for the latter much the best
service and prices are from Fotis (
T
22980 25873); their
office is over the bridge, on the road towards Askéli, but if
you call they can deliver a bike to you.
Island tours
In high season, thrice-weekly boat trips
around the island depart from the central waterfront while
a
trenaki
offers a variety of tours from the car park by the
ferry dock, including a regular evening haul all the way up
to the Temple of Poseidon.
Póros Town
PÓROS TOWN
rises steeply across the western half of tiny volcanic Sferiá, a landmark
clocktower at its summit. There's a two-room
archeological museum
on the waterfront
(Tues-Sun 8.30am-3pm; €2) whose local finds will fill a spare half-hour, but otherwise
few sights. This is a place to eat, drink, shop and watch the world go by. Away from the
waterfront you'll quickly get lost in the labyrinth of steep, narrow streets, but nowhere
is far away and most of the restaurants reasonably well signed. For a fine view over the
rooftops and the strait, climb up to the
clocktower
(signed Roloï) - the tower itself is
structurally suspect and fenced off, but you can still enjoy the outlook.
ACCOMMODATION PÓROS TOWN
Rooms in Póros Town itself can be in very short supply at weekends and holiday times, when prices are inevitably high
(they can be dramatically lower out of season); some noise is always likely too. Over on Kalávria (see p.340) there's
considerably more choice, with plenty of apartments and small hotels in the touristy enclaves of Askéli - close to good
beaches - or less attractive Mikró Neório.

EATING, DRINKING AND NIGHTLIFE
The central waterfront is mostly given over to competing cafés, all of which are open from breakfast till late, bars and
souvenir shops: the better tavernas lie towards the southeastern end of the waterfront or up in the steep streets of the
hilltop town. The southeastern end of the waterfront is also the place for good-value cafés - on Platía Dhimarhíou, for
example, or next to the archeological museum. The better bars and clubs are in this direction too, becoming livelier as you
head out along the coast road, though nightlife is highly seasonal. The open-air Cine Diana, functioning in the summer
only, is on the northern waterfront towards the ferry dock.
