In-Depth Information
Peloponnese, is the heart of tourist life. From the harbour, you can take a boat to Moní
(10min; €5 return), most of which is fenced of as a nature conservation area and is
worth the trip for a swim in wonderfully clear water. Pérdhika Bay itself is shallow and
yacht-tainted, though you can swim from the rocky shore further round.
On the headland opposite the harbour, along with crumbling wartime bunkers, is a
Camera Obscura built by two Austrian artists. In the darkened interior twelve narrow
slits project an inverted 360 degree image of the landscape outside. If you have your
own transport, a couple more cove beaches are accessible beyond Pérdhika, where new
holiday homes are reached by steep concrete tracks.

Hermes At the furthest extremity of the esplanade, this
café-bar is Pérdhika's busiest late-night spot, probably
because its position means it can afford to turn the music
up louder than its neighbours. Daily 10am-late.

MARATHÓNAS
Ostria T 22970 26738. An idyllic setting, with tables set
out under the trees at the southern end of the beach and
the water lapping almost to your feet. The food is great too,

PÉRDHIKA
Andonis T 22970 61443. One of a long line of tavernas
along the front, this is the best of the bunch for fish; plenty
of Athenian and yachtie patronage, so prices are a little
higher than its neighbours - fish is priced by the kilo. Daily
lunch & dinner.

Angístri
ANGÍSTRI , fifteen minutes by fast boat from Égina, is a tiny island, obscure enough to
be overlooked by most island-hoppers, though the visitors it does have are a diverse
mix: Athenian weekenders, retirees who bought and restored property here years ago,
plus a few British and Scandinavian package holidaymakers. There's a small, not
terribly attractive strip of development on the north coast facing Égina, but the rest of
the island is pine-covered, timeless and beautiful - albeit with very few beaches. It's also
strangely schizophrenic: holiday weekends can see hordes of young Greeks camping out
on otherwise empty beaches, while in Skála a few small, classy hotels are juxtaposed
with cafés serving English breakfasts to the package-trippers.
ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE
ANGÍSTRI
By ferry There are ferries and hydrofoils to and from Pireás
via Égina; ferries dock at Skála (twice daily in the week,
three from Fri-Sun; 25min/1hr 30min); hydrofoils at Mýlos
(12 daily in summer, 6 out of season; 10min/1hr). The
Angístri Express ( T 694 71 18 863) calls at both on its route
to and from Égina (2-3 daily; 15min).
Ferry operators Hellenic Seaways (ferry and hydrofoils;
T 22970 91171, W hsw.gr) and Aegean Flying Dolphins
(hydrofoils; T 22970 91221, W aegeanlyingdolphins.gr).
GETTING AROUND
By bus In summer, the island bus connects Skála and
Mýlos with Dhragonéra, Limenária and Apónissos several
times a day; the day's timetable (timed to match ferry and
hydrofoil arrivals) is chalked up at its starting point, outside
the church in Skála.
By scooter and bike Scooters and mountain bikes are
available for rent from several outlets in Skála and Mýlos;
Kostas Motorent in Skála ( T 22970 91021) is particularly
helpful. It is less than 10km to the furthest point of the island,
so in cooler weather you can comfortably cross Angístri by
