planned, however, to incorporate displays from the now defunct Municipal Folklore
Museum, so it is to be hoped that there will be an all-round improvement. For a more

Municipal Tobacco Warehouse (Dhimotikí Kapnapothíki), at Platía Kapnergáti.
ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE
KAVÁLA AND AROUND
By plane Megas Alexandhros airport is about 25km east
of Kavála. There is no airport or convenient local bus. Taxis
cost at least €40. There are frequent flights to the UK
(Thomsonfly) and Athens (3-4 daily; 1hr).
By bus The main bus station is on the corner of
Mitropolítou Khryssostómou and Filikís Eterías.
Destinations Alexandhroúpoli (4 daily; 3hr); Keramotí
(hourly; 1hr); Komotiní (hourly; 2hr); Philippi (half-hourly;
20min); Thessaloníki (hourly; 2hr); Xánthi (half-hourly; 1hr).
By ferry Details for the following services are available
from the port authority ( T 2510 223 716) and tickets from
agencies such as Zolotas ( T 2510 835 671), around the
harbourfront towards the terminal/customs house.
Destinations Híos (2-3 weekly; 12hr); Ikaría (1 weekly;
17hr); Lésvos (2-3 weekly; 10hr); Límnos (2-3 weekly;
5hr); Sámos (2 weekly; 15hr); Thássos (Skála Prínou; 6
daily; 1hr 15min).
By car If you're driving in, you can usually find a space on
the quay car park near the Thássos dock or the one next to
the Archeological Museum.
INFORMATION
Tourist o ce The municipal tourist office (summer
daily 8am-9pm; T 2510 231 011) in the main square,
Platía Eleftherías, has a host of brochures and sells
tickets for the summer Philippi-Thássos Festival; it is
often unmanned, however.

house. The one single with shared bath ( €30 ) is the
cheapest acceptable place to stay in town, but the plain
en-suite rooms are overpriced. €50

rooms with a/c - ask for the quieter side or back ones.

This expertly refurbished Ottoman medrese offers rooms
and suites that have been faultlessly fashioned, while
keeping the original building intact. Services include a
traditional hammam with massage, a restau rant s erving
Ottoman dishes and a womb-like indoor pool. €300
Irini T 2510 229 785. On the shore 3km east of the port
and served by city bus #2, this is the nearest campsite to
town, with reasonable facilities. March-Oct.
Nefeli Erythroú Stavroú 50 T 2510 227 441, W nefeli
.com.gr. This nondescript modern hotel nonetheless has
the best-val ue e n-suite rooms in town and the roof garden
is pleasant. €50
EATING
Eating out in Kavála offers a good deal of variety, although most places are on the waterfront. The most fruitful area for
exploration is the Panayía district, with its row of moderately priced tavernas and ouzerís.
Ì O Kanadhos Poulídhou 27 T 2510 835 172. Grilled
meat for around €6 is the speciality at this friendly and
exceptionally cheap place run by returnees from Toronto -
hence the name and the English-speaking management.

Orea Mytilini Zafira Karaolí Dhimitríou 36 T 2510 224
749. The most reliable of the waterfront eateries, most
items on the menu for under €10, as long as you avoid the
top-quality fish. Daily 11am-2am.
Tembelhanio Poulídhou 33b T 2510 232 502. Cosy
ouzerí serving a tasty range of mezédhes, involving both
meat and seafood, to a soundtrack of eclectic Greek and
Middle Eastern sounds. Daily noon-2am; Sun closes 6pm.
To Araliki Poulídhou 33 T 697 23 39 033. Just about all
the main dishes are meaty ones from the grill and cost
under €10. There is also a fair range of salads and dips, plus
fine Limniot wine. Daily 10am-late.
DRINKING AND NIGHTLIFE
As a student town, Kavála has plenty of lively bars and night spots, especially around pedestrianized Ayíou
Nikoláou, behind the eponymous church. A string of trendy café-bars also lurks on pedestrianized Palamá, parallel to
Venizélou street.
