The surrounding mills and Balkan-style houses, some decorously decaying, others
tastefully renovated, reward aimless wanderings - though everything is well signposted.
The folklore museum

The only real sight as such is a delightful little folklore museum near Ayía Paraskeví
church; it displays various household objects and other traditional items of the kind
that would once have graced every home in the district.
ARRIVAL AND INFORMATION
ÉDHESSA
By train The train station is in the north of town and has 8
daily services to Thessaloníki.
By bus The main KTEL station is on the corner of Filíppou and
Pávlou Melá and serves Thessaloníki (hourly; 1hr 30min);
Véria (Mon-Fri 3 daily; 1hr), as well as local destinations.
Tourist o ce This excellent new visitor centre in the
park at Garéfi and Pérdhika (daily 10am-6pm; T 23810
20300, W edessacity.gr) is far and away the best in the
region. English-speaking staff can provide useful
bilingual leaflets and all manner of information about
activities, such as trekking, rafting, kayaking and skiing in
the surrounding region.

hospitality, this beautifully converted stone mansion boasts
open fires, cosy en-suite rooms decorated in a vernacular

deluxe facilities, such as the only swi mming pool, and great
views make it reasonable value. €80

EATING AND DRINKING
There are few standout restaurants but a surplus of excellent souvláki joints all over town. Café and bar life is concentrated
in the pedestrian zones flanking the rivulets, especially on Angelí Gátsou.
Fysiolatrikos Omilos Edhessas No phone. Superbly
sited among the woods, 2km out of town on the road to
Aridhéa, this local nature club puts more effort into its decor
than its food, but the latter is appetizingly presented and has
some adventurous Gallic touches. Daily 10am-midnight.

Beside the first stream going north from the centre, this
cosy joint specializes in tastily seasoned meat dishes such
as chops, sausage and seftaliá , served on greaseproof paper
for €7-9. Mon-Sat 11am-1am.
Psilos Vrahos Megaálou Aléxandhrou 2 T 23810
26793. Perched atop its namesake vantage point, this
municipal café is worth a visit for a beer, coffee or fruit juice
and the superb view. Daily 8am-midnight.
Ì Stathmos At the train station T 23810 21110. The
name means “Station” but this is no railway canteen.
Rather it is a superb taverna serving meaty delights like
tender gourounopoulo for only €7, plus the full gamut of
tasty mezédhes. Highly entertaining proprietor too. Daily
noon-2am.
Nymféo
Perched at 1300m on the eastern flank of Mount Vítsi, some 85km southwest of
Édhessa and 60km northeast of Kastoriá, lies the well-groomed mountain village of
NYMFÉO , popular of late with prosperous young Greek professionals looking for
alternative recreational activities in retreats far from the city.
ACCOMMODATION AND EATING NYMFÉO
As a trendy getaway, Nymféo accommodation tends to be on the pricey side, especially at weekends, so try to visit during
the week. The hotel restaurants also tend to be pricey but there are cheaper tavernas in the village centre.
