GETTING AROUND
By bus The local bus system ( W oasth.gr) is very
comprehensive and user-friendly; from a booth or
períptero single-ride tickets cost €0.80, while a €0.90
ticket allows multiple transfers for up to ninety minutes;
each ticket type costs €0.10 extra from machines on
board; a 24hr pass costs €3. Useful lines include #10 and
#11, both of which ply the length of Egnatía/Karamanlí.
From Platía Eleftherías, just behind the seafront, buses
initially run east along Mitropóleos; line #5 takes you to
the archeological and folklore museums, and #23 heads
north through Kástra to the highest quarter, known as
Eptapýrgio.
By taxi Taxis are plentiful and reliable; an average trip
across the town centre will cost €3-5.
By car If you have a car, it's best to use the attended fee-
parking area that occupies all of Platía Eleftherías, where you
pay on exit. Otherwise, finding a kerbside space is tough, even
in the suburbs; most city-centre street parking costs €1.70 per
hour from 8am-8pm Mon-Fri and 8am-3pm Sat - buy
stripcards from a períptero . Nearly all streets are one way. Most
car rental agencies are clustered near the fairgrounds and
archeological museum on Angeláki, which is a good place to
compare prices. The leading multinationals here have kiosks at
the airport too, but you will get better deals from local firms,
