In-Depth Information
Unusual for in-town is this attractive option, located
lakeside, well equipped and mosquito-free, though a bit
cramped and more geared towards camper vans than
tents. To get here, take city bus #8 or do the 20min walk
1500 m we st of Platía Mavíli. For two adults, comes to
about €25
NISSÍ

EATING AND DRINKING
Ioánnina offers numerous restaurants . The most obvious concentration lines part-pedestrianized Pamvótidhas
northwest of Mólos quay (though addresses are cited as Stratigoú Papágou, the parallel back alley (see map). Just
outside the kástro gate are a few traditional Greek tavernas and psistariés . On Nissí Island, the obvious dockside tavernas
are atmospheric venues for freshwater specialities like eel ( héli ), crayfish ( karavídhes ), carp ( kyprínos ) and frog legs.
Ì Byzantine Museum Cafe Its Kale. This is a bustling,
atmospheric spot, with fine views, ideal for a meal, or just a
drink, before or after you check out the museums here - or
any time, really. Expect to pay a little more, about €15/
person, €3-4 for a drink. Daily 9am-10pm.
Fysa Roufa Avéroff 55 T 26510 70705. Traditional
mayireftá such as patsás , mayirítsa , baked fish, suckling pig
and spetzofáï , whose slightly higher prices are amply justified
by the calibre of the cooking, the service, a pleasantly
upmarket environment, and the large portions; unusually,
there's a full line of desserts too. Cosy loft seating for winter,
and a decor of archival photos from Párga, the proprietor's
birthplace, and Greek theatre actors. Open 24hr.
Limni Stratigoú Papágou 26 T 26510 78988. More
likely than its neighbours to have seafood (its name means
“lake”), and its slightly elevated prices are compensated for
by large portions and the rather luxurious standard, with
both indoor and lakeside terrace seating. Expect to pay
about €20/person, depending very much on the fish you
choose. Daily lunch & dinner.
Ì Stin Ithaki Stratigoú Papágou 20A T 26510
73012. The most ambitious menu on the lakefront,
encompassing Turkish-style kebabs, Cypriot specialities
and Smyrna recipes as well as Epirot standards such as
trout, píttes , cheeses and mushrooms in various guises.
Starters are big, and even better value than main courses,
which run €7-10. Try the traditional walnut cake,
karythopita for dessert. Daily lunch & dinner.
To Manteio Karamanlis T 26510 25452. Facing the old
ramparts, this simple taverna is very popular with locals,
serving all manner of authentically earthy food, including
great tztaziki (€3.50) and perfect souvláki, chicken or pork
(€8), with home-made chips and secret sauce, all washed
down with good house wine. Daily lunch & dinner.

NIGHTLIFE
Nightlife oscillates between the calmer cafés on pedestrian-only lanes on either side of Platía Pýrrou and along nearby
Dhodhónis, and the more nocturnal café-bars , patisseries and ice-cream parlours on Platía Mavíli, heart of the Mólos or
lakefront, where a gas-lantern-lit carnival atmosphere prevails. There are more wine bars, crêperies and the odd cheerfully
painted “pub” scattered across the approaches to the castle, especially along Karamanlí. Posters announce hangar-like
summer music clubs out on the lakeshore.
Café Avli Pamvotidhos/Platía Mavíli T 26510 35416.
This is a quieter choice in the lakeside café zone, focused on
a colourful, tree-shaded courtyard. Primarily frequented by
students, as are all the spots around here. Drinks €2-5.
Daily, morning till late.
Presveia Karamanlí 17 T 26510 26309. Come to this
pub to sample the “new” heartier style of beer now being
produced locally in northern Greece. Much appreciated by
the evidently well-heeled students who throng here (beers
go for €4-10), the place has some 100 varieties on offer, as
well as food to go with it (€5-14 for various options with
cheese, ham and the like). Daily, evenings till late.
ENTERTAINMENT
Cinemas There are three cinemas around Platía Pýrrou,
which usually host first-run films (nearly all in English, with
subtitles), as does the Odeon five-screen at the Paralimnio
Centre, out in Votanikós district.
Theatre and music Various formal music/theatre events
occur in midsummer; get information and tickets from the
EOT office.
DIRECTORY
Books, maps and newspapers For quality maps and a
respectable stock of books in English, head for Papasotiriou
bookshop at Mihaïl Angélou 6, just off Platía Pýrrou; the
newsstand at Pyrsinélla 14 has foreign newspapers.
