frequent hydrofoils or catamarans to the Sporades.

central agent for Hellenic Seaways ; Vis Travel around the
corner at Andonopoúlou 3 ( T 24210 25666) represents
Saos Ferries .
Destinations Alónissos (1 daily car ferry in summer, 3
weekly spring and autumn; 4hr 45min-5hr; daily summer
catamaran, 3hr); Ayía Kyriakí (summer jet boat 3-4 daily;

waterfront, this basic, bright, plainly modern choice offers
double-glazed windows, a/c, a small elevator and
balconies. Rooms and bathrooms are generally on the
small side but clean, but ask to see them before choo sing.
Look for the sunny yellow building. No breakfast. €35

W amhotels.gr. Comfortable enough and nicely situated,
just behind a large park and with port views from most
balconies, this is a classic business hotel. Rooms are slightly
on the small side, but well appointed, with marble tri m and
state-of-the-art baths. Free wi-fi. Breakfast included. €100

proximity to the waterfront and the archeological museum,

EATING AND DRINKING
Vólos specializes in one of Greece's most endearing and enduring institutions - the authentic ouzerí or tsipourádhiko ,
serving various mezédhes washed down not necessarily with ouzo but with tsípouro , the all-but identical spirit of the
northern mainland.
Haliambalias (aka Zafiris) Kondarátou 8 corner
Skýrou. Founded in 1947 and the place to go for affordable
mayireftá ; the menu never varies much from vegetarian
tourloú , baked pérka fish and a few stews. Closed Sun.
Monosandalos Tsopotoú 1 T 24210 37525. Located near
Nikifórou Plastíra and the enormous Áyios Konstandínos
church. Come here for the waterside seating and seafood,
including the house special, garidhokrokétes (shrimp patties).
A full meal should run about €15. Daily lunch & dinner.
Nikos Iasonos 118. You can always count on the freshly
grilled souvlákis, chicken or pork, served here. You'll find it
near the Art Deco cinema back from the port. €10/person
or less for a freshly prepared, simple meal. Daily, noon to
midnight.
NIGHTLIFE AND ENTERTAINMENT
The most central nightlife zone, comprising intimate live-music venues and café-bars where conversation is possible, fills
the grid of pedestrianized lanes east of Koumoundoúrou and north of Dhimitriádhos; a few indoor clubs survive at the west
edge of town near the KTEL, particularly on Lahaná.
Cinemas There's a summer cinema off Platía Yeoryíou, the
Exoraïstiki, unusually specializing in art-house fare; in
winter film action moves to the Art Deco Ahilleion multi-
plex on Koumoundoúrou.
Theatre Concerts and plays are performed at either the
open-air or covered theatres on Platía Ríga Feréou.
