CAFÉ
Filion Skoufá 34; map p.66. A local institution for coffee,
cakes, omelettes, salads and breakfast: busy at all times of
day with a more sober crowd than the average Kolonáki
café. Daily 8am-midnight.
SOUTHERN ATHENS
RESTAURANTS
Ambrosia Dhrákou 3-5, Koukáki T 210 922 0281; map
p.60. A friendly psistaría (grill house) packed with locals,
especially on summer nights when the tables spill out into
the pedestrian walkway. Food is inexpensive, simple and
delicious - succulent grilled chicken, pork chops, kebabs
and Greek salads - and service friendly and attentive. Daily
lunch & dinner.
Da Capo Tsákalof 1; map p.60. One of the most popular
of the many establishments on this pedestrianized street,
just north of Kolonáki square. Da Capo is very chic and,
unusually, self-service. Mon-Sat 7am-midnight, Sun
8.30am-midnight.
Karavitis Arktínou 33, cnr Pafsaníou, Pangráti T 210
751 5155; map p.60. This crumbling building, a lone
single-storey survivor surrounded by high-rises, looks a
dump from outside, but within there's a cheery old-style
taverna with barrel wine, mezédhes and clay-cooked
main courses (€7.50-10). In summer there's outdoor
seating in an enclosed garden. Dinner daily, plus
Sunday lunch.
Katsourbos Amínta 2, Pangráti T 210 722 2167; map
p.60. Cretan food is highly fashionable in Athens, and this
modern-looking place is right on trend, with tasty food
created from ingredients sourced from the island.
Relatively expensive (€25-30 all in), but worth it. Daily
lunch & dinner.
Mikri Vouli Platía Varnáva 8, Pangráti T 210 756 5523;
map p.60. A bustling neighbourhood mezedhopolío , with
tables out on the square in summer and excellent meze
( €5-9), including some unusual varieties. There are plenty
of other places around the square. Daily lunch & dinner.
Spondi Pýrronos 5, just off Platía Varnáva, Pangráti
T 210 756 4021, W spondi.gr; map p.60. Long-time
contender for the title of Athens' best restaurant, Spondi
has two Michelin stars to show for the efforts of French
chef Arnaud Bignon, and serves superb French-influenced
cuisine in a lovingly restored bourgeois mansion. With
starters - crab in fine herb jelly with cauliflower mousse
- from €30 and mains such as milk-fed lamb with
candied lemon and polenta mostly around €40, it's not
cheap, but for a special occasion it's worth it. Tasting
menus including wine €75 and €147; booking is essential.
Daily lunch & dinner.
Strofi Robérto Gálli 25, Makriyiánni T 210 921 4130;

CAFÉ
Ì Acropolis Museum café Dhionysíou Areopayítou
15, in the Acropolis Museum; map p.66. It is perhaps just
as well that you can only eat here if you've bought a ticket
for the museum, as otherwise it would be permanently
mobbed. There's a large, cool, smoke-free internal area, plus
a partly shaded terrace looking up towards the Parthenon.
Food is simple - salads, sandwiches, cakes and drinks -
and portions aren't huge, but the quality is superb and the
prices very low by Athens standards (€14 for sandwiches,
€2.50 for a cappuccino). Try the delicious píta me fakés , a
traditional lentil pie. Tues-Sun 8am-8pm, late opening
Fri till 10pm.
PIREÁS
If you're looking for food to take on board a ferry, or
breakfast, you'll find numerous places around the market
area and near the metro station, as well as all along the
waterfront. There are plenty of bakeries and souvláki joints
here, including a handy branch of Everest on the corner of
Aktí Kalimassióti by the metro. Otherwise there's little good
food in the port area, but some superb fish tavernas over at
Mikrolímano.
RESTAURANTS
Ì Ammos Aktí Koumoundhoúrou 44, Mikrolímano,
Pireás T 210 422 4633; map p.60. In contrast to the high-
luxe places around it, Ammos goes for an island feel, with
hand-painted tables and beach scenes. Still mainly fish
(drunkard's mussels €7.80, grilled prawns or fisherman's
pasta €15), but also a wide variety of meze ( €5-9) and
slightly lower prices and a younger crowd than its
neighbours. Book at weekends. Daily lunch & dinner.
Jimmy And The Fish Aktí Koumoundhoúrou 46,
Mikrolímano T 210 412 4417; map p.60. Excellent,
glamorous and inevitably expensive fish-taverna occupying
the prime position among the harbourside places on
Mikrolímano. Fabulous lobster spaghetti and fresh fish (priced
by the kilo); linguine vongole €17, Caesar salad with prawns
€16. Booking essential at weekends. Daily midday-2am.
CAFÉ
Aktoploiko Aktí Tsélegi 4; map p.60. Less manic than
most around the port, with tables outside on a
pedestrianized part of the waterfront just of Platía
Karaïskáki, this café serves breakfast and light meals -
souvláki , salads, pasta - throughout the day. Daily till late.
