WESTERN ATHENS
RESTAURANTS
Butcher Shop Persefónis 19, Gázi T 210 341 3440;
map p.60. As the name and the decor - a modernist take
on a traditional butcher shop - suggest, this is not one for
the vegetarians. Instead there's all sorts of high-quality
meat, from lamb chops (€15.40) to game birds (€12) plus a
huge variety of burgers (€10-12.50), exotic sausages
(€7.50-9) and the fanciest yíros in town (with shank and
pancetta of free-range pork, €11.50). Great chips too. Daily
noon-1am.
Chez Lucien Tróön 32, Áno Petrálona T 210 346 4236;
map p.60. Excellent French bistro with a short menu of
authentic, well-prepared dishes at reasonable prices, and a
set menu for €23. You may have to wait - there are no
reservations - and/or share a table. Tues-Sat from
8.30pm; closed Aug.
Filistron Apóstolou Pávlou 23, Thissío T 210 342 2897;
map p.66. Somewhat touristy, but worth it for the roof
terrace with great Acropolis view. Short menu of tasty,
well-presented mezédhes from all over Greece (small
plates €5-8.50, large ones €8-13.50), which means some
interesting and unusual dishes; good value given the
location. Tues-Sun noon-midnight.
Gazohori Dhekeléon 1 & 5 T 210 342 4044; map p.60.
A big, busy place in two separate buildings, attracting a
typically young Gazí crowd. Traditional meze served on
marble-topped tables, with wine in tin jugs, at reasonable
prices; large pikilía (meze selection) €16. Daily lunch &
dinner.
Ì Ikonomou Tróön 41, cnr Kydhantidhón, Áno
Petrálona T 210 346 7555; map p.60. Wonderful,
traditional taverna with home-cooked food served to
packed pavement tables in summer. No menu, just a dozen
or so inexpensive daily specials: check out what others are
eating as the waiters may not know the names of some of
the dishes in English. Mon-Sat dinner only.
Ì To Steki tou Ilia Eptahálkou 5, Thissío T 210 345
8052; map p.66. Simple, inexpensive place on a
pedestrianized street above the metro tracks that's so busy
the owners have opened a second branch 200m further
down (at Thessaloníkis 7). Renowned for some of the finest
lamb chops in the city. Tables on the street in summer.
Tues-Fri dinner only, Sat lunch & dinner, Sun lunch only.
Varoulko Pireós 80, Keramikós T 210 522 8400,
W varoulko.gr; map p.66. Chef Lefteris Lazarou has
earned a Michelin star every year since 2002: considering
that, the exquisite seafood here is neither over-elaborate
nor overpriced (even so, reckon on €70 or so a head). The
elegant modern setting includes a summer roof terrace
with Acropolis views; expect starters like crayfish with
apple-geranium ice cream, mains such as John Dory with
horseradish and sour-apple cream. Booking essential;
dinner only, closed Sun.
CAFÉ
Athinaion Politeia Akamántos 1, cnr Apóstolou
Pávlou, Thissío; map p.66. An enviable position in an old
mansion, with great views from the terrace towards the
Acropolis, makes this a popular meeting place and a great
spot to relax over a frappé. Rather pricey light meals also
served. Daily 9am-3am.
KOLONÁKI
RESTAURANTS
Balsamakis (To Kotopoulo) Platía Kolonakíou, north
side T 210 360 6725; map p.60. As the name indicates,
this tiny hole-in-the-wall is the place for chicken - juicy,
crispy, rotisserie-style; also kebabs and yíros . It's strictly
no-frills, lit by fluorescent lights and packed with people at
all hours. A few tables on the pavement too. Mon-Sat
11am-11pm.
Dhimokritos Dhimokrítou 23 T 210 361 3588; map
p.66. Old-fashioned, posh and perhaps a bit snooty - lots
of suits at lunchtime - but a beautiful building and well-
prepared, reasonably priced food from a vast menu, much
of which is displayed in glass counters near the entrance;
try for example the tiropitákia (€5) followed by lamb in
lemon sauce (€12) or a veal chop (€15). Mon-Sat lunch &
dinner, Sun lunch only; closed Aug.
Filippou Xenokrátous 19 T 210 721 6390; map p.60.
This old-time taverna has been completely refurbished.
The newly elegant interior (and a no-smoking policy that's
actually enforced) hasn't changed the menu much,
though; you can still check out the simmering pots and
casseroles in the kitchen, or find favourites like pork in
lemon sauce or rabbit with wine sauce for around €8, as
well as some more ambitious, modern Greek dishes.
Liveliest at lunchtime. Mon-Fri lunch & dinner, Sat
lunch only.
Ì Ikio Ploútarhou 15 T 210 725 9216; map p.60. The
name means “homely”, and that seems to be how the locals
find it - a busy, reasonably priced, bourgeois
neighbourhood restaurant with a slightly modern take on
Greek classics and a short menu of daily specials, such as
chicken meatballs with arab pie and yoghurt sauce (€10),
plus pasta and salads. Mon-Sat lunch & dinner.
Ì Il Postino Grivéon 3, in alleyway off Skoufá T 210
364 1414; map p.66. Good-value modern Italian osteria,
serving freshly made pasta (from €9, spaghetti vongole
€14) and simple Italian dishes (home-made gnocchi with
gorgonzola and prosciutto €12) in a friendly, bustling
room. Daily 1pm-1am.
Jackson Hall Milióni 4 T 210 361 6098; map p.66. A
very “Kolonáki” type of place; a big, busy, expensive
American-themed diner with a music bar upstairs. Burgers
(€14), steaks (€23), pasta, salads and the like, plus coffees
and juices in the morning, cocktails and beer at night. Daily
all day till late.
