W phidias.gr; Metro Thissío; map p.66. With an enviable
position in Thissío overlooking the Acropolis, at the heart of
a newly fashionable area crammed with designer cafés, the
Phidias has cosy if rather dated rooms, with TV and a/c.
Service with a scowl, and overdue for a makeover, but it's
decent value; almost all ro oms have balconies and fabulous
views. Breakfast included. €70
HOSTEL

T 210 523 2540, W athens-international.com; Metro
Metaxouryío; map p.60. A huge affair, with 140 beds over
7 floors in 2-, 4- and 6-bed dorms, all a/c and en suite,

KOLONÁKI
Periscope Háritos 22 T 210 729 7200, W periscope.gr;
map p.60. Designer minimalism on a shopping street in
Kolonáki. Some rooms are on the small side (though the
penthouse suite has its own rooftop hot tub) and the matt
grey submarine theme can be a bit drab, but they're very
comfortable, with every faci lity including free wi-fi,
satellite TV and DVD/CD player. €140
St George Lycabettus Kleoménous 2 T 210 729 0711,
W sgl.gr; map p.60. A luxury hotel and an Athenian
classic, with a position high on Lykavitós hill overlooking
the city. Abundant marble and leather in the public areas
plus a welcome rooftop pool, and bars and restaurant
fashionable with wealthy young Athenians. Some of the
rooms are rather small, however, and there 's no point
staying here if you don't pay extra for the view. €150
