H + ions to form water, the addition of OH is equivalent
to a reduction of m H + .
The term alkali describes a water-soluble base , in par-
ticular the hydroxides of sodium (Na) and potassium
(K). For this reason Na and K are known as alkali met-
als ; in geological usage this term is often abbreviated to
'alkalis'. Sodium and potassium form basic oxides
(Box 8.1).
