A severe glass-and-grey-steel building houses Tokyo's premier modern art venue, the
Tokyo Museum of Contemporary Art . The vast white spaces inside provide the perfect
setting for a fine collection of works by Japanese and Western artists (notably Roy
Lichtenstein) from the post-1945 avant-garde through the 1950s abstract revolution to
pop art, minimalism and beyond. Only 150 pieces are displayed at a time but you can
see the rest of the collection (some 3800 items) in the audiovisual library. Other
facilities include cafés, a museum shop and a well-stocked art library.
