By subway A single subway line connects Kannai and
stations north to Shin-Yokohama, on the Shinkansen line;
services run every 5-15min and the minimum fare is ¥200.
By Akai Kutsu sightseeing bus A retro-style sight-
seeing bus runs from outside Sakuragichō station's east
exit via Minato Mirai, Akarenga complex, Chinatown and
Yamashita-kōen to Harbour View Park, then loops back
via Ōsanbashi pier. Services run every 10-15min (¥100 per
hop, or ¥300 for a day-pass).
By ferry Perhaps the most enjoyable way of getting about
the city is on the Sea Bass ferries ( W yokohama-cruising.jp)
that shuttle between Yokohama station (from a pier in the
Bay Quarter shopping complex) and southerly Yamashita-
kōen, with some services stopping at Minato Mirai and
Akarenga en route. There are departures every 15min
(10am-7.30pm; ¥700).

cheaper and more stylish than anything else in this price
range. Secure, clean and with a good location, it also has

Hostel Village 3-11-2 Matsukage-chō, Naka-ku
T 0456 63 3696. As the name suggests, this hostel is
spread across various buildings; the main location is nice
and clean, has a fun rooftop area, and holds regular parties
and other themed nights. They also do good weekly and
monthl y deal s for tho se who 'll be in Yokohama a while.

Royal Park Hotel 2-2-1-3 Minato Mirai, Nishi-ku
T 0452 21 1111, W yrph.com. Occupies the 52nd to 67th
floors of the Landmark Tower, so spectacular views are
guaranteed. Rooms are fairly spacious and come with
good-sized bathrooms. As well as a fitness club and
swimming pool (¥2100-5250), facilities include a tea-
ceremon y room (¥1500) and the Sirius Sky Lounge .

EATING
One of Yokohama's highlights is sampling the enormous variety of restaurants and snack-food outlets cramming the streets
of Chinatown . In fine weather, the casual little eating places on the ground floor of Akarenga are also a good option,
if only because you can take your food to the tables outside.

Small, unpretentious restaurant tucked in the backstreets
and known for its Bairan yakisoba - stir-fried noodles
served like a sort of pancake, crispy on the outside and
with a juicy pork or beef stu ng (¥900 and ¥1260, respec-
tively); one serving is big enough for two. Mon-Fri
11.30am-3pm & 5-10pm, Sat & Sun 11am-10pm.
Chano-ma ͪΌͷ· 3F Akarenga 2, 1-1-2 Shinkō,
Naka-ku T 0456 50 8228. Sit back with a cocktail and
nibble modern Japanese dishes at this large, relaxed
restaurant-cum-tearoom (a sister of the one in Tokyo; see
p.154) which has a very contemporary vibe. Lunch sets
from ¥1000. Mon-Thurs & Sun 11am-11pm, Fri & Sat
11am-5am.
Enokitei ͑ͷ໦͍ͯ 89-6 Yamate-chō T 0456 23 2288.
Set in a venerable Yamate home, this cute English-style café
serves dainty sandwiches and home-made cakes, often
arrayed on vertically stacked plates. Tues-Fri 11am-7pm.
Manchinrō ᤈ௝ᒭ 153 Yamashita-chō T 0456 81
4004, W manchinro.com. This famous restaurant has
been serving tasty Cantonese cuisine since 1892, and
though prices are on the high side, the portions are
generous. Noodle and fried-rice dishes start at around
¥1100, lunch sets at ¥2500 and evening sets at ¥5000.
The branch behind serves a full range of dim sum. Daily
11am-10pm.
Shōfukumon ট෱໳ 81-3 Yamashita-chō T 0456 64
4141. Multistorey restaurant that's one of the best-
respected venues in Chinatown. There's a regular menu, but
best to opt for one of the all-you-can-eat dim sum deals
(¥2625, plus fried rice and soup). Mon-Fri 11.30am-
10pm, Sat & Sun 11am-10pm.
