that's always been a winner for its fairy-lit, relaxed ambience.
Stick to the least ambitious things on its gaijin -friendly
menu, such as burgers and chunky sandwiches (around
¥1500) or eggs benedict (¥1800), and you'll be fine. Daily
11.30am-11pm (Fri & Sat till 11.30pm).

p.113. Located in an old bathhouse, this long-running
tonkatsu restaurant serves up great-value set meals from
¥1580. The actual bathhouse bit is the smoking section of
the restaurant. Daily 11am-10pm.

pp.108-109. Kurkku is Finnish for cucumber, not many
of which are in evidence at this ecologically sound
operation which includes a shop, library and charming roof
garden. This is the more relaxed and cheaper of the two
restaurants in the stylish complex, where meatballs made
with organic pork (¥1000) are a speciality. Mon-Thurs
11am-midnight, Fri & Sat 11am-4am.
Murugi ϜϧΪ 2-29-1 Dōgenzaka, Shibuya-ku T 03

of Shibuya's sleazeland, this curry restaurant has been
going for decades - since 1951, in fact - perhaps thanks to
their distinctive Fuji-shaped rice mounds (actually more
like the Matterhorn, but whatever). The curries will set you
back ¥1000, and taste just fine; the only problem is that
the restaurant is only open for lunch. Daily except Fri
11.30am-3pm.

restaurant using mainly organic ingredients for dishes such
as do bulgogi (marinated beef ) salad. Plenty of dishes are
under ¥2000. Mon-Fri 11.30am-1am, Sat 6pm-1am,

little place that's hidden well enough away to avoid the
maddening queues typical of the surrounding area. Lunch
sets, mainly Italian in nature, go for ¥900; the menu varies
but expect pasta, salad, mashed potato and grilled veg
to be among the choices, along with a free coffee. Daily
10am-9pm.

p.115. At this crazy-busy gourmet rāmen joint, the waiter
will give you a choice of how soft or hard you'd like their
superb noodles cooked. There are a few interesting selec-
tions available on the fun cross-section menu, including
the “Midorio”, made with basil and cheese - weird, but it
works. More regular varieties are served in a rich pork
broth, topped with delicious pork slices and a heap of
chopped spring onions. A bargain at ¥850 a bowl. Mon-

café-style dishes, such as nachos, falafel and roast chicken
(most for ¥1000 or less), this hipster's hangout has tons
of English style, fashion mags to browse and internet
access. Mon-Thurs 11.30am-2am, Fri & Sat 11.30am-
5am, Sun 11.30am-midnight.
Royal Garden Café 2-1-19 Kita Aoyama, Minato-ku

wood interior, bakery and wraparound terrace sheltered
by leafy trees, this organic food café at the entrance to
Meiji-jingū outer garden strikes all the right notes. Good
set lunches, including pasta or salad as a main, are ¥1000
during the week and around ¥2000 for weekend brunch.

monjayaki and yakisoba joint behind the weird and
wonderful Design Festa gallery (see p.113). Dishes start at
¥950, and a good drinks selection means it's a fun place
at night. Daily 11.30am-11pm.
Sushi Ōuchi Ეେ಺ 2-8-4 Shibuya, Shibuya-ku T 03

sushi-ya ensure they use the best organic produce and fish
caught only from the wild. This one does, and the pleasant
surprise is that it's very affordable, with a set platter of
sushi for as little as ¥2100, although you can easily spend
more. The interior presents a warm, farmhouse feel. Mon-

Two Rooms 5F AO Building, 3-11-7 Kita-Aoyama,

to the city's high-end dining scene, this is a formal restaurant
and a relaxed bar with a spacious outdoor terrace that
provides one of the best views in Tokyo. Perfectly cooked
European food using top-quality Japanese ingredients is
enhanced by wonderfully polite service. On Sunday they do
a brunch for ¥2950; otherwise lunch sets start at ¥1850,
dinner tasting menus at ¥7500. Restaurant 11.30am-
2.30pm & 6-10pm; bar 11.30am-2am (Sun till 10pm).
