is one of Tokyo's most authentic Parisian-style brasseries -
their steak frites is the real thing - and it's a pleasant spot
to hang out sipping coffee or red wine. Pastries start at

91. Designed like a street-food stall, and set on a side alley
away from the main road, this cute Korean barbecue place
is a fun place to cook salty beef short ribs above a charcoal
brazier for ¥1050; also consider other traditional dishes,
such as chijime seafood pancake for ¥840. Mon-Wed

pp.90-91. A faux-Edo-period storehouse is home to this
atmospheric Japanese restaurant. Take your pick between
reasonably priced soba (from ¥800) and grilled items (from
¥180) on the ground and second floors, while on the third
it's sushi - a full meal will set you back around ¥3000.
There's a wonderful samurai drama atmosphere, and it's
easy to see how the place inspired the climactic scenes of
Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bill Vol. 1. Daily 11.30am-5pm.

places in the Roppongi Hills complex, serving decent dim
sum from ¥200 a plate, and mains for under ¥1000. The
interior is surprisingly fancy-looking for a budget place.

Quality soba (from ¥735) and pork dishes (from around
¥5000) are the speciality of this atmospheric restaurant,
whose design was inspired by the sets from Akira Kurosawa's
movies Yojimbo and Red Beard . Mon-Fri 11.30am-3pm &
5-10pm, Sat noon-9pm.

French masterchef has six Tokyo outposts; this one in
Roppongi Hills is the best, offering tasting menus starting
at ¥2950 for lunch, ¥4800 for dinner. There's a no-bookings
policy, so you may have to wait to get a seat at the long
counter, facing the open kitchen where black-garbed chefs
create culinary mini-masterpieces before your very eyes.

map pp.90-91. Top hotels aside there aren't too many
places in Tokyo where you can get as good a Western-style
gourmet breakfast as at this super casual place, which
successfully conjures up the stylish South Beach vibe in the
midst of Roppongi Hills; try the eggs benedict for ¥1800.
Later in the day it's just as good a spot for bistro favourites
on the outdoor terrace; their made-to-order sou és are
well worth trying. Daily 7am-10pm.

dramatic Japanese-style design for Nobu Matsuhisa's Tokyo
operation, where you can sample the famous black-cod
dinner (Robert de Niro's favourite) for ¥3500. For something
a bit different, try tiradito , Nobu 's South American twist
on sashimi. Mon-Fri 11.30am-2pm & 6-10.30pm, Sat
& Sun 6-10.30pm.

map pp.90-91. Kimono-clad waitresses shu e around this
160-year-old kura (storehouse), converted into one of Tokyo's
best eel restaurants; a set meal will cost around ¥5000. The
private rooms upstairs can only be booked by parties of four
or more; if it's busy, they may guide you to the annexe around
the corner, which has an almost identical interior. Mon-Sat
11am-1.30pm & 5-8pm.

91. You'd better be hungry before dining at this modern
American brasserie, as portions are huge. Their speciality
is rotisserie chicken (a quarter of the bird is ¥1600), while
any of their other grilled meat dishes could easily feed two.
Microbrew beers and a tempting range of desserts are also

Thai dishes are served at this casual place bedecked with
colourful, ethnic trinkets. The set lunch is great value (¥980),
though also consider the laab (a dryish curry made with
pork, basil and water spinach; ¥1340). Daily 11.30am-2pm
& 5-11pm.

station; map pp.90-91. Part of the venerable Sushisei
chain, this is the best sushi place in Roppongi Hills, with
a great lunch set for ¥1300 as well as dinner sets from
¥1800. Ask to sit at the counter if you want to order directly
from the chefs. Daily 11am-10pm.

par excellence , matching stylish interior design with food
made from the freshest seasonal ingredients. The buffet
lunch deal is good (although the place gets busy with o ce
workers) while in the evening set menus kick off at ¥6000
