Over on the east side of Ikebukuro Station, the
Seibu department store
rules, thanks to
the presence of the company's flagship address. Seibu has a history of innovation and
spotting new trends, and as such its main complex remains a popular shopping destination
with folk from all over Tokyo. Apart from the main store, there are also branches of Parco
and Loft, Seibu offshoots specializing in fashion and household goods, respectively.
A short walk south of Sunshine City - which features the area's tallest tower - is
Higashi-Ikebukuro Yon-chōme Station, where you can hop on Tokyo's last tramway,
the Toden-Arakawa Line (see box opposite). From here you can head southwest to
Waseda or east to Kōshinzuka, to come into Sugamo from the north.

Heading east from Ikebukuro station, you can't miss the monstrous sixty storeys of the
Sunshine 60 Tower
, which at 240m was Japan's tallest building until being pipped by
Yokohama's Landmark Tower in 1993. An underground passage at the end of Sunshine
60-Dōri leads into the tower, just one of four buildings comprising the
Sunshine City
complex of shops, of
ces, exhibition space, a hotel and various cultural centres
- though compared to the city's newer developments, it all looks rather dowdy. There's
an
observation deck
on the top floor but the highlight here, if you have kids, is a visit
to the wacky indoor theme park
