The Name Service Cache Daemon (NSCD)
The Name Service Cache Daemon provides fast access to data that is
returned by common name service requests. NSCD can be configured to
provide caching for passwords, groups, hosts, ipnodes (IPv6 hosts), and the
RBAC database ( exec_attr , prof_attr , and user_attr ).
When started, the NSCD determines the naming services being used and
reads the appropriate data files ( /etc files, NIS maps, NIS+ tables). The
/etc/nscd.conf file is used to configure parameters associated with the
NSCD operation.
The Get Entry (getent) Command
The getent(1M) command can be used to return the information from a
specified name service database. The appropriate name services are
searched in the order specified by the name service switch ( /etc/
nsswitch.conf ). The database is specified as the first command-line argu-
ment. This can be passwd , group , hosts , ipnodes , services , protocols ,
ethers , networks , or netmasks . The keyword to be looked up is specified
as the second command-line argument.
Network Information Service (NIS)
NIS, like other network applications, follows the client/server architecture
model. This section describes the components of NIS, how to configure
these components, and how to add and update NIS maps.
