In-Depth Information
During system installation, the contents of one of these files is copied to the
/etc/nsswitch.conf files based on the name service selected (if any).
Keep in mind that DNS is used to resolve hostnames to IP addresses. This is for both
IPv4 and IPv6. Therefore, the only two information keywords that can use dns as a
source are hosts and ipnodes . Also keep in mind that these two entries are the only
difference between the /etc/files configuration ( nsswitch.files ) and the dns configu-
ration ( nsswitch.dns ).
Listing 16.1 shows the default contents of the /etc/nsswitch.nisplus file.
To use this configuration, copy this file to the /etc/nsswitch.conf file.
Comments are preceded by the pound ( # ) character. An action can be defined
for a status message by using a message = action statement within square
brackets ( [] ) after the source keyword.

The Contents of the /etc/nsswitch.nisplus File
#
# /etc/nsswitch.nisplus:
#
# An example file that could be copied over to /etc/nsswitch.conf; it
# uses NIS+ (NIS Version 3) in conjunction with files.
#
# “hosts:” and “services:” in this file are used only if the
# /etc/netconfig file has a “-” for nametoaddr_libs of “inet” transports.
# the following two lines obviate the “+” entry in /etc/passwd
# and /etc/group.
passwd: files nisplus
group: files nisplus
# consult /etc “files” only if nisplus is down.
hosts: nisplus [NOTFOUND=return] files
ipnodes: files
# Uncomment the following line and comment out the above to resolve
# both IPv4 and IPv6 addresses from the ipnodes databases. Note that
# IPv4 addresses are searched in all of the ipnodes databases before
# searching the hosts databases. Before turning this option on, consult
# the Network Administration Guide for more details on using IPv6.
#ipnodes: nisplus [NOTFOUND=return] files
#Uncomment the following line, and comment out the above, to use both DNS
#and NIS+. You must also set up the /etc/resolv.conf file for DNS name
#server lookup. See resolv.conf(4).
#hosts: nisplus dns [NOTFOUND=return] files
services: nisplus [NOTFOUND=return] files
networks: nisplus [NOTFOUND=return] files
protocols: nisplus [NOTFOUND=return] files
rpc: nisplus [NOTFOUND=return] files
ethers: nisplus [NOTFOUND=return] files
netmasks: nisplus [NOTFOUND=return] files
bootparams: nisplus [NOTFOUND=return] files
