PACIFIC NORTHWEST WITH DOGS
The Pacific Northwest is a pretty friendly place to travel with your dog - though
there are some rules. At national and state parks, check regulations: dogs are usu-
ally only allowed in certain areas, and must be leashed. Some city parks, however,
have off-leash areas.
On long day trips, take breaks to let Fido stretch and do his business - highway
rest stops often have pet areas. It's important to make sure your pet has a firmly
attached collar ID or is chipped - losing your pet while on the road does not always
result inThe Incredible Journey. Bringing a familiar toy or blanket can be comfort-
ing.
Many Pacific Northwest hotels and motels have rooms set aside for well-be-
haved pooches, often requiring a small fee or deposit; weight limitations some-
times apply. Some places are especially pet friendly, like Kimpton hotels
( www.kimptonhotels.com/services/pet-friendly.aspx ) . Avoid leaving dogs alone in
a hotel room - it's a strange place and they might bark, disturbing other guests.
Nearly all campgrounds allow dogs if they're leashed and picked up after. Smaller
inns or B&Bs generally don't take pets, however. For a different take on boarding
services in Portland and Seattle, see www.airpethotel.com .
Super-dog-friendly dining establishments in the big cities include Portland's
Lucky Labrador Brew Pub ( www.luckylab.com )and Seattle's Norm's Eatery &
Ale House (460 N 36th St). Vancouver law doesn't allow dogs on patios, so things
are more limited there.
