In-Depth Information
Enjoy the sand at Medicine Beach and Clam Bay on North Pender as well as Gowlland
Point on the east coast of South Pender. Just over the bridge to South Pender is Mt Nor-
man , complete with a couple of hikes that promise grand views of the surrounding is-
lands. The island also has a regular Saturday farmers market ( www.pifi.ca ; Pender Islands
Recreation & Agriculture Hall, North Pender;
9:30am-1pm Sat Apr-Nov) in the community
hall.
Many artists call Pender home and you can chat with them in their galleries and studi-
os by downloading a pair of free maps from Pender Creatives ( www.pendercreatives.com )
that reveal exactly where they are (most are on North Pender). Alternatively, hit the wa-
ter with a paddle (and hopefully a boat) via the friendly folks at Pender Island Kayak
Adventures ( www.kayakpenderisland.com ; Otter Bay Marina; tours adult/child from $59/35) .
Sleeping & Eating
Inn on Pender Island INN$$$
( 800-550-0172, 250-629-3353; www.innonpender.com ; 4709 Canal Rd, North Pender; d/cabins
from $79/159) At this rustic lodge with motel-style rooms and a couple of cozy, wood-
lined cabins, you're surrounded by verdant woodland, which explains the frequent ap-
pearance of wandering deer. The lodge rooms are neat and clean and share an outdoor
hot tub; the waterfront cabins have barrel-vaulted ceilings, full kitchens and little porches
out front.
Poet's Cove Resort & Spa HOTEL$$$
$$$
( 250-629-2100, 888-512-7638; www.poetscove.com ; 9801 Spalding Rd, Bedwell Harbour, South
Pender; d from $250; ) A luxurious harbor-front lodge with arts-and-crafts-accented
rooms, most with great views across the glassy water. Extras include an activity center
that books ecotours and fishing excursions, and there's also an elegant West Coast res-
taurant (Aurora), where you can dine in style. As well as this, the resort offers kayak
treks plus a full-treatment spa, complete with that all-important steam cave.
Cafe at Hope Bay WEST COAST$$$
( www.thecafeathopebay.com ; 4301 Bedwell Harbour Rd, North Pender; mains $14-23;
11am-8:30pm Tue-Sun) West Coast ingredients with international influences rule at this
bistro-style spot (closely followed by the sterling views across Plumper Sound). The
fish-and- chips is predictably good, but dig deeper into the menu for less-expected treats
such as the lip-smacking coconut curried mussels and prawns. It's just a few minutes
from the Otter Bay ferry dock.
