In-Depth Information
( www.redfish-bluefish.com ; 1006 Wharf St; mains $6-20; 11:30am-7pm Mon-Thu, to 8pm Fri-
Sun) On the waterfront boardwalk at the foot of Broughton St, this freight-container
takeout shack serves a loyal clientele who just can't get enough of its fresh-made sustain-
able seafood. Highlights like scallop tacones, wild salmon sandwiches, tempura battered
fish-and-chips and chunky Pacific Rim chowder all hit the spot. Find a waterfront perch
to enjoy your nosh, but watch for hovering seagull mobsters.
Hernandéz MEXICAN$

( www.hernandezcocina.com ; 735 Yates St; mains $5-8; noon-8pm; ) Fiendishly well hid-
den in an office-building lobby between Yates and View Sts, this Mexican hole-in-the-
wall is a local favorite. Vegetarian options abound, but the huarache de pollo - thick tor-
tilla with chicken - is legendary. Despite a recent expansion, there are never enough
peak-time tables, so consider taking your butcher-paper parcel to Beacon Hill Park for a
picnic. Cash only.
Jam Cafe BREAKFAST$$$

( www.jamcafevictoria.com ; 542 Herald St; mains $8-16; 8am-3pm) The locals won't tell you
anything about this slightly off-the-beaten-path place. But that's not because they don't
know about it; it's because they don't want you to add to the line-ups for the best break-
fast in town. The delectable eggs-benny varieties are ever popular, but we also recom-
mend the amazing (and very naughty) chicken French toast. Victorians are passionate
about their brunches - it's their main social occasion - and this place is always humming.
Arrive off-peak: there are no reservations and waiting for a table is common.

own subsidized, old-school restaurant where MLAs (and the public) can drop by for a
silver-service menu of regional dishes, ranging from salmon salads to velvety steaks and
a BC-only wine list. Entry is via the security desk just inside the building's main entrance
(photo ID required).
